Machine Hurled To Walk Strikes Man Near Mishap - John Goodman Killed Instantly Sunday When Cars Crash - Grand Jury to Investigate

. A motor accident Sunday afternoon claimed the life of a third New Albany man in two months. John Goodman, 61 years old of 146 West Main Street, was crushed to death at 3:35 o’clock while standing on the sidewalk at Shelby Street and Indiana Avenue. He was struck by an automobile, which was hurled from the street during a collision with another machine. The accident is being investigated by the grand jury according to Prosecuting Attorney William Janes, along with those in which B. F. Dyson was killed December 9, and Charles Hottle was fatally injured, January 25. In the mishap Sunday afternoon, a man was injured and three others bruised. Mr. Goodman was struck while talking to August Ott, 40, of 1115 Culbertson Avenue. The accident took place so quickly that Mr. Ott, who had his back turned to the street, did not know how the victim was hit. Within a few moments after the crash, the body of Mr. Goodman was lying between the trees on the lawn of the Advent Christian Church; the machine which struck him was on the side against a tree which it had hit and partially uprooted, and the other automobile was standing on its top, pinning one of its occupants beneath it. The motor, which struck Mr. Goodman, was driven by Roger Weber, 23, of 1401 Grant Street who was going west on Shelby Street. Although one side of his car was crushed in, the driver escaped injuries. As the machine struck the curb a wheel was shattered. The other machine, which was driven by Robert Tresenriter, 19, of 1116 Greenaway Place, was going north on Indiana Avenue. The impact of the collision overturned the Tresenriter automobile and as it was knocked over, Bernard Gehring, 17, of 614 Beeler Street, was pinned under it. Tresenriter and two other youths in his car, Elmo Wells, 18, of 1401 East Elm Street, and Kenneth Fish, 2270 McLean Avenue, extricated Gehring. His injuries were found to be slight after he was taken to St. Edward’s Hospital, for first aid treatment. The others in the accident escaped with slight bruises. Tresenriter told the police his brakes failed to hold on the wet street and that he was unable to avoid the crash. Weber said he swerved to avoid the collision, leaving his motor headed toward the curbing when it was struck. According to witnesses to the accident, Tresenriter’s machine struck the rear end of the Weber automobile. Tresenriter and Weber were taken to the police station for questioning and the former was charged with reckless driving. Dr. P. H. Schoen, acting County Coroner, announced that an inquest will be held at 10 o’clock Tuesday morning at the Circuit Court room. He said Mr. Goodman’s chest and neck were crushed. The accident was investigated by Capt. Oda Pyle and Patrolman Alonzo Lynch and Lee Deich, who responded to a call for assistance with the police ambulance. The victim, who was a native of Floyd County, operated a wood yard with his brother, Henry Goodman. Surviving are five sons, George, Maurice, Arthur and John Goodman Jr. of New Albany, and Carl Goodman, Vincennes, Ind.; a daughter, Mrs. Louis Hancock, Beeler Street, who Mr. Goodman had visited shortly before the accident; two brothers, Henry Goodman, New Albany, and Jacob Goodman, Fowler, Ind., and three sisters, Mrs. Harry Hurn and Mrs. Kate Ringle both of Fowler, and Mrs. Harry Beechdote, Birmingham, Ala. Mr. Goodman was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where funeral services will be held at 9 o’clock Tuesday morning. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body was removed from the George A. Kraft Funeral Parlors, East Spring Street, to the home of the victim’s daughter, Mrs. Louis Hancock, 2227 Beeler Street.

Goodman     NEW ALBANY WEEKLY LEDGER OBITUARY – 02/13/1931

. A Coroner’s inquest was held at 10 o’clock Tuesday at New Albany to investigate the accident in which John Goodman, 61 years old, 146 West Main Street, was instantly killed Sunday as he stood on the sidewalk at the intersection of Indiana Avenue and Shelby Street. One of two cars in a collision at the corner ran over him when it was hurled against a telephone pole. Bernard Gehring, 17, who was in the motor driven by Robert Tresenriter, 19, 1116 Greenaway Place was pinned beneath the car when it collided with one driven by Roger Weber, 23, 1401 Grant Street. Gehring’s injuries were slight. It was Weber’s car, which ran over Mr. Goodman. Tresenriter was held on a charge of reckless driving after he was questioned by police. He said his brakes failed to hold on the wet pavement. Weber explained that he swerved to avoid the collision. Funeral services were held for Mr. Goodman at 9 o’clock Tuesday at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by five sons, George, Maurice, Arthur and John Jr., all of New Albany, and Carl, of Vincennes; a daughter, Mrs. Louise Hancock; two brothers, Henry of New Albany and Jacob of Fowler, and three sisters, Mrs. Harry Hurn and Mrs. Kate Ringle of Fowler, and Mrs. Clyde Beechdote of Birmingham, Ala.

Non-Committal Verdict Given After Inquest - Prosecutor Declares Killing of Goodman Will Be Sifted - Motorists Give Testimony

. The grand jury will investigate the motor accident Sunday afternoon, in which John Goodman, 61 years old, 146 West Main Street, was instantly killed while standing on the sidewalk at Indiana Avenue and Shelby Street. Prosecuting Attorney Janes announced this morning following a non-committal verdict by Acting County Coroner P. H. Schoen. The inquest was held in the Court House and a number of witnesses were questioned by Dr. Schoen. The coroner’s verdict was that the victim came to his death by being struck by a machine driven by Roger Weber, 23 years old, of 1401 Grant Street, and that the Weber car was hit by an automobile driven by Robert Tresenriter, 19, of 1116 Greenaway Place. The latter is facing a temporary charge of reckless driving held against him by the police, pending action of the grand jury. Among the witnesses were Weber, Tresenriter, Elmo Wells, 18, of 1401 East Elm Street, and Kenneth Fish, 2270 McLean Avenue, the latter being occupants of the Tresenriter machine and August Ott, 1115 Culbertson Avenue. Bernard Gehring, 17, of 614 Beeler Street, who was also an occupant of the Tresenriter machine and who was hurt when he was pinned beneath it after it turned over was unable to attend the inquest on account of his injuries. Both Weber and Tresenriter testified that they did not stop at the intersection, although the latter under provisions of the city ordinance failed to observe a boulevard stop sign. Tresenriter, however, testified that his brakes were not able to stop his car due to the wet condition of the street. Ott testified that the accident occurred so quickly that he did not see how the victim with whom he was talking was struck by the Weber machine. Ott said he had hardly given warning to Goodman of the impending collision when the man was hit. Funeral services for the victim were held this morning at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial took place in the church cemetery.
