A
Floyd
County man with no prior
underwater diving experience drowned
Sunday
while scuba diving with two friends in a pond on his Edwardsville farm,
conservation
officer Steve Hash reported. Richard D. Loftus, 35, was pronounced dead
at
Floyd Memorial Hospital where he was taken after a Med-Aid ambulance
crew
was unable to revive him at the scene. Friends reported that Loftus had
been
diving with them in a 12-foot-deep pond at the farm prior to the 4 p.m.
accident.
They said he continued to dive while they took a break, experienced
difficulty, came to the surface and called for help. Authorities were
told Loftus removed
his oxygen tank, mask and buoyancy compensator but then went underwater
and
did not resurface. They said he was still wearing a weight belt and
flippers
when he went under. The friends told authorities they tried in vain to
locate
Loftus and called for a diving shop owner who found his body about an
hour
later. Results of an autopsy are pending, however, the death is being
considered
an accidental drowning. Results of a preliminary test on the diving
equipment
Loftus was using did not indicate any malfunction, however more
extensive
testing may be done, authorities said. Loftus was a native of
Floyd
County and was a builder, developer and farmer in the Edwardsville
area.
He served on the board of directors at Edwardsville ASCS and was a
member
of St. Mary’s of the Knobs Church. Survivors include his wife, the
