. George M. Packwood, 69, of 2201 Shelby St., died Monday at Humana Hospital-University of Louisville following an illness. He was a native of Floyd County and a retired employee of Colgate-Palmolive Co. in Clarksville. Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Caudill of Jeffersonville; his mother, Juanita Packwood of Jeffersonville; a sister, Betty Jean Brock of Jeffersonville; and a grandchild. Funeral services are 1 p.m. tomorrow at Kraft Funeral Home, with burial in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today.     Packwood     NEW ALBANY TRIBUNE OBITUARY – 10/14/1988 - SELLERSBURG

. George W. Packwood, 34, of 511 St. Joe Road East, died there Thursday. Clark County Coroner Edwin M. Coots said the death was a suicide. He was a chemist for Englehart Co. in Louisville and a member of Free Gospel Church in Underwood. Survivors include his father, George M. Packwood of Sellersburg; his stepmother, Norma Packwood of Sellersburg; a sister, Kathleen Caudill of Jeffersonville; a half-brother, Joe Kiesler of New Albany; two half-sisters, Mary Byerly of New Albany and Helen Stiltz of Jeffersonville; and his grandmother, Juanita Packwood of Jeffersonville. Kraft Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

. Norma J. Graf Packwood, 70, died Friday in Depauw. She was a native of Mauckport and a retired caregiver for the elderly. Survivors include four sons, Stanley W. Hammack of San Diego, Calif., Michael N. Hammack of Georgetown and Toot and Gary T. Graf; four daughters, Carla Inojo of Depauw, Jackie Hammack of San Diego, Calif. Susie Graf of Elizabeth and Cindy Hammack of Georgetown; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The body has been cremated. Garr Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

. Charles E. Paris, 76, of 324 W. Brooks Ave., died today at Clark Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Leitchfield, Ky., retired from American Air Filter in Louisville and a Marine veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, the former Viola F. Lumpkins; four sons, Kenny Paris of New Albany, Larry and Jim Paris of Jeffersonville and David Paris of Clarksville; two daughters, Ann Castleman and Nancy Banet, both of New Albany; two sisters, Norma Rettig of Warren, Ohio, and Anita Nicholson of Dumfries, Va.; 21 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. . Funeral services for Viola F. Lumpkins Paris, 85, of New Albany, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 22, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, New Albany, with burial in Walnut Ridge Cemetery, Jeffersonville. She died Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at Autumn Woods Health Campus with her family by her side. She was a housewife, worked at the Army Ammunition Plant and was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. The daughter of the late Edward and Elizabeth Hall Lumpkins, she was born July 27, 1920, in Clark County. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Ed” Paris; brothers, Ralph Morrison and Maurice Lumpkins; a sister, Rose Meyer; and a daughter-in-law, Suzanne Paris. Survivors include her children, Kenneth Paris, Larry Paris and his wife, Mimi, Ann Castleman and her husband, Jimmy, David Paris and his wife, Bobbi, Nancy Banet and her husband, Patrick and Jimmy Paris and his wife, Carole; sisters, Louise Cain and Jean Bottorff; brother, Garland Morrison; 21 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. . Bernice E. Paul, 75, died Sunday at North Florida Regional Hospital. She was a native of Greenville, the widow of John F. Paul Jr. and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Rebel Post 5625 Ladies Auxiliary, Moose Lodge 325 of Fanning Springs, Fla., the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Cedar Key, Fla., American Legion Post 42 Ladies Auxiliary in Floyds Knobs and St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Survivors include five sons, Stephen F. Paul of Floyds Knobs, Dennis J. Paul of Tallahassee, Fla., John Eric Paul of Greenville, Christopher L. Paul of Georgetown and Nicholas D. Paul; a daughter, Melissa K. Sutton of Hagerstown; three brothers, Carl Kiesler of Bradenton, Fla., Melvin Kiesler of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Vernon Kiesler of Inverness Fla.; a sister, Phyllis Huber of Jeffersonville; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. . Mrs. Cecelia Frances Paul, 75, of 310 Illinois, died at 10:20 a.m. Sunday at Clark County Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Paul, a native of New Albany, was the widow of John Paul. She was a member of St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, Legion of Mary, Altar Society, and Third Order of St. Francis. She is survived by two sons, John Francis Paul, Greenville, and Robert Carman Paul, New Albany; three daughters, Mrs. William Hutt, Clarksville, Mrs. Omer Fricker, Lawrenceburg, and Mrs. Charles R. Gedling, Jeffersonville; 24 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Augustine Church. Burial will be in the St. Anthony Cemetery. The body will be at the Coots Funeral Home after noon Monday. The rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

. John F. Paul Jr., 71, died Thursday at North Florida Regional Hospital in Gainesville, Fla. He resided in Chiefland, Fla. He was a native of Jeffersonville, a retired machinist who retired from Colgate Palmolive Co. in 1978. He was a World War II veteran, a member of the “Hell’s Angels” bomb group, the American Legion Post 3281, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5625, American Association of Retired Persons, St. John Evangelist Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife, the former Bernice Kiesler; five sons, Stephen Paul of Floyds Knobs, Dennis Paul of Tallahassee, Fla., Eric Paul of Greenville, Christopher Paul of Georgetown and Nick Paul of Chiefland; a daughter, Melissa Sutton of Hagerstown; a sister, Ella Mae Fricker of Jacksonville, Fla.; and nine grandchildren. A mass will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. John Evangelist Catholic Church in Chiefland, with burial in the Florida National Cemetery. A prayer vigil and V.F.W. services will be at 7 p.m. today at Knauff Funeral Home in Chiefland. Visitation is at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. today.     Paul     NEW ALBANY TRIBUNE OBITUARY – 01/11/1943

. The brother of Mrs. John Meeks, this city, John F. Paul Sr., 64, died at 2:10 o’clock Sunday afternoon at his home at 310 Illinois Avenue in Jeffersonville. A patternmaker for the American Car and Foundry Company, Mr. Paul was a member of the Knights of St. John, the Red Men, the Holy Name Society and St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Jeffersonville, and the Catholic Community Center, New Albany. Among the survivors are two sons, both in the armed services, John F. Paul Jr., is with the U. S. Air Force in England, and Robert C. Paul is stationed at the Naval Training School at the Great Lakes. Other survivors include the widow, Mrs. Cecelia Reisz Paul; three daughters, Mrs. William Hutt, Sellersburg and Mrs. Ella Mae Paul, and Mrs. Charles Geding both of Jeffersonville; one brother, Albert Paul, Jeffersonville, three other sisters, Mrs. Charles Hickey, Jeffersonville; Mrs. Gertrude Marshall, Louisville, and Mrs. Howard Boaz, Indianapolis. Funeral services will be held in St. Anthony’s Church at 9 o’clock, Wednesday morning. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

. Betty Payne, 59, died Wednesday at Norton Hospital in Louisville. . Henry B. Payne, 71, died yesterday at his home. He was a native of Union Town, Ky., a Marine veteran of the Korean War, retired from Hobart Manufacturing of Louisville, a retired clerk at Haub Hardware and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Floyd County Post 3281 in New Albany and St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Bradford. Survivors include his wife, the former Margaret Nance Atwood; a son, Michael Payne of Orleans; six daughters, Amy Payne and Michelle Dillon, both of Salem, Jeanie Hall of Hardinsburg, Luann Schroeder of Indianapolis and Sharon Cooper and Betsy Senn; three stepsons, Carl D. Atwood of New Albany, Ronnie D. Atwood of Floyds Knobs and Steven W. Atwood of Borden; three stepdaughters, Valerie K. Caffee of New Albany and Anita Jo Sprigler and Kelly A. . William A. Peck Sr., 66, of 411 Chickadee Lane, died Thursday at Clark County Hospital. He was a native of Indianapolis and owner and operator of Al’s Liquor Inc. Survivors include his wife, the former Gloria J. Chasteen; two sons, William A. Jr. and Robert D. Peck of Jeffersonville; his mother, Mrs. Helen Ryan of Indianapolis; a brother, Louis L. Peck of Rockford, Ill.; three sisters, Mrs. Emma J. Bara of Chicago, Mrs. Dorothy Clemons of Terre Haute, and Mrs. Jane Miller of Brethren, Mich.; three half sisters; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. . Funeral services for Mrs. May Leona Pepper, 63, wife of William F. Pepper, 414 East Chestnut Street, Jeffersonville, who died Friday at St. Joseph’s Infirmary, Louisville, were held Monday afternoon at the First Presbyterian Church in Jeffersonville with burial in the Graceland Memorial Park, New Albany. Mrs. Pepper was a former resident of New Albany and among her survivors are two sons, E. Dumont Pepper and Eugene Pepper, of New Albany.

. A funeral Mass for John F. Peterson Sr., 79, of Sellersburg, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 4, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sellersburg, with burial to follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in New Albany. He died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at his home. He was the son of the late Charles H. and Elizabeth (Kuper) Peterson. He was born in New Middleton, retired from American Synthetic Rubber Company in 1976, was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, a World War II Army veteran and a member of VFW Post 3281. Survivors include his daughter, Maxine F. (Rick) Mittel, Jeffersonville; two sons, John F. (Sandy) Peterson, Starlight, and Charles J. (Debbie) Peterson, Sellersburg; a sister, Angela M. Brown, Galena; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret E. (Kiesler) Peterson; and a brother, Harry Joseph Peterson. . Margaret “Mackie” E. Kiesler Peterson, 76, died yesterday at Clark Memorial Hospital. She was a homemaker and a native of Harrison County. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Floyd County Post 3281 Ladies Auxiliary and St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sellersburg. Survivors include her husband, John F. Peterson Sr.; a daughter, Maxine F. Mittel of Jeffersonville; two sons, John F. Peterson Jr. of Starlight and Charles J. Peterson; two brothers, Clement H. Kiesler of Clarksville and Dr. Anthony H. Kiesler of Georgetown; a sister, Anna Cecil of Louisville; six grandchildren; and a granddaughter-in-law. She was preceded in death by a brother, Francis G. Kiesler. A funeral Mass is 10 a.m. tomorrow at the church, with burial in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Generations Funeral Home, Ballard Lane, New Albany.     Piers     NEW ALBANY WEEKLY LEDGER OBITUARY – 06/13/1923

. James Piers, 77, grandson of Thomas Piers, who built the first Catholic Church in Floyd County, the 100th anniversary celebration of which event took place several weeks ago, died at 2 o’clock Friday morning at his home, three miles north of Greenville. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alice Piers, and three sons, Lester, Hubert and Henry Piers. Funeral services were held at 9 o’clock Monday morning at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Navilleton, of which Piers was a member.

. Mrs. Kathryn E. Piers, 85, died Thursday at 8:15 a.m. at Floyd Memorial Hospital. She lived at Rt. 1, Palmyra. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Willard Fessel of Rt. 1, Palmyra and Mrs. Helen Browning of Macon, Ga.; two brothers, Charles Kiesler of Palmyra and Herman Kiesler of Louisville; three sisters; Mrs. Anna Buechler of Bradford and Mrs. Clara Beach and Mrs. Mary Beach, both of Greenville; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. . James R. Quebbeman, 70, formerly of Harrison County, died Tuesday at SS. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital in Louisville. He was a retired chemical operator for the B. F. Goodrich Co. in Louisville and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Carlisle Avenue Baptist Church, Jolly Elders Senior Citizens Club and Jaywalker Square Dance Club, all in Louisville; and Veterans of Foreign Wars Old Capitol Post. Survivors include his wife, the former Carolyn Fidler Moore; two sons, James L. Quebbeman of Chicago and Douglas Quebbeman of Jeffersonville; a daughter, Ruth Ann Bush of New Albany; two stepsons, David and Kevin Moore, both of Louisville; two sisters, Louise Wagner of Clarksville and Patricia Kintner; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. . Patrick D. Quinn, 39, a former New Albany resident, died unexpectedly Thursday night at Ann Arbor, Mich., after a two-week illness. A native of New Albany, he had lived in Ann Arbor 15 years and was manager of WPAD radio and television station. He was a Purdue University graduate. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Vonda Quinn; a son, James M. Quinn; two daughters, Jeanne and Barbara Quinn, all of Ann Arbor; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James F. . Lawrence S. ”Doc” Rose, who spent 40 years as a teacher in the New Albany school system, passed away Sunday at Floyd Memorial Hospital. He was 83. A native of Booneville, Ky., Rose taught Biology and Chemistry at New Albany High School from 1931 to 1970 and was head of the Science Department at the school for many years. Rose received his B.S. and M.S. from the University of Louisville and also got a PhD in Bio-Chemistry from the same university. Rose was a long-time member of the Depauw Masonic Lodge, having been initiated in 1923. He was also a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. He was a member of St. Mary’s of the Knobs Catholic Church, a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a World War II veteran, member of the American Legion, a Rotarian, a 1932 graduate and senior class president of Louisville’s St. Xavier High School, past president and chairman of Community Federal Savings & Loan, past president of the State Savings & Loan League of Indiana, director of the Federal Home Loan Bank, director of the U. S. Savings & Loan League, two-term president of Community Chest, director of Catholic Charities, director of Humana of Southern Indiana, member of the Floyd County Historical Society and a member of the New Albany Country Club. Survivors include his daughter, Kathy Smith and husband, Don; grandsons David C. Smith, Denver, Matthew L. Smith and wife, Danette, Minneapolis, and Christopher R. Smith, Minneapolis; great-grandsons Benjamin, Tyler, Luke and Grant Smith, all of Minneapolis; sister-in-law Mary Tighe Russell, New Albany; and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank everyone for their kindness and thoughts at Providence Retirement Home, particularly Father Ken, Sister Agnes and Betty Rhodes, his very dear friend. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today, Sunday, April 10, at Kraft Funeral Home, 708 E. Spring St. in New Albany, with a prayer service at 4 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Providence Retirement Home or Hospice of Southern Indiana.
