Schueler, 32, was discovered by his wife, Melba, between 12:30 and 1:00 p.m. in the attic of their residence at 1916 McDonald Lane. Schueler had hanged himself from a rafter. Dr. Cannon set the time of death at approximately 10:30 a.m. He said that Schueler had recently been ill. A World War II veteran, Schueler was employed by the American Saw & Tool Company, Louisville. He was a member of the New Albany Council, Knights of Columbus, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. He leaves two daughters, Patricia, and Theresa. Other survivors are his father, John F., and four brothers, John J., Robert J., Charles F., and William R. Schueler, all of New Albany. The body is at the Kraft Funeral Home.     Schueler     NEW ALBANY PUBLIC PRESS OBITUARY – 04/03/1901

. John Schueler, a good citizen and butcher, without warning, ended his life at his home Sunday morning by suicide. When Mrs. Schueler went to the stable Upper Eight Street and Culbertson Avenue, she found his lifeless body suspended from a beam by a halter strap. Schueler arose early. Mrs. Schuler thinks about 5 o’clock. He remarked that he was going to the stable to feed the horse. Placing his money on the mantle in the room in which they had been sleeping, he left the house. He evidently made all the preparations for his suicide with the greatest deliberation. After caring for the horse, the indications are that he procured the halter strap, and knotting it around his neck, he inverted a bucket and from it fastened the other end of the strap to the beam above. He then “kicked the bucket” and, when found, his feet barely cleared the floor of the stable. Only a short time ago, he purchased the property in which he had been living and conducted a meat market and green grocery. His business was not as prosperous as he had anticipated, and for several weeks he had been despondent and had talked of abandoning the place and taking employment with his father, who is a prosperous butcher, living on the North Side. Schueler was about thirty-eight years old and besides his wife, four children are left.

Schueler     NEW ALBANY DAILY LEDGER OBITUARY – 04/01/1901

. John Schueler, who conducted a grocery and meat market at East Eighth Street and Culbertson Avenue, committed suicide Sunday morning by hanging himself in his stable. Despondency on account of business affairs is said to be the cause of the rash act. Mr. Schueler arose Sunday morning at 5:30 o’clock and, as was his custom, went to the stable to feed his horse, while his wife prepared breakfast. When her husband did not return at the usual time, Mrs. Schueler went to the stable to call him and was horrified to find him hanging from a rope fastened to the rafters, dead. She immediately called for assistance and Coroner Starr was summoned. The Coroner, after viewing the remains, ordered the body to be cut down when it was turned over to Undertaker Kraft to be prepared for burial. From the surroundings it is supposed that immediately after reaching the stable, Mr. Schueler climbed up to the rafters, fastened the rope, and standing on a bucket adjusted the noose about his neck and then kicked the bucket from under him. Mr. Schueler was thirty-five years of age and leaves a wife and four children. He had been engaged in business with his father, but a short time ago bought the business at East Eighth Street and Culbertson Avenue. It seems the business did not prove a success and the constant worry over the matter had, it claimed by his friends, unbalanced his mind.

Elderly New Albany Man’s Rooms Were Poorly Ventilated

. While temperatures reached a near-record high of 104 degrees in the area, a local man was found dead in his apartment where the temperature reached at least 100 degrees. Paul A. Schueler, 71, was found dead around 12:30 a.m. Friday on the bedroom floor of his apartment at 24 Willow Run. New Albany Police checked the apartment at the request of a friend of Schueler’s who had been unable to get in contact with him. Floyd County Coroner Greg Balmer said Schueler probably died between 8 and 10 p.m. on Thursday. While heat wasn’t the primary reason Schueler died, Balmer said it played a part. Balmer said the temperature exceeded 100 degrees in the apartment around 1 a.m. Friday morning. “It was hot in there,” he said. “The heat was more than likely a contributing factor.” Balmer said the elderly man had other medical conditions, including a prior stroke and heart disease. While Schueler had a working air conditioning system in his apartment, Balmer said it wasn’t on. He also said Schueler had a small fan, but he said it didn’t do much in the apartment that had poor circulation. Balmer said only one bedroom window was open in the apartment, but the circulation of air was poor due to the placement of the windows. “There was no way for ventilation to do any good because the windows were only in the front,” Balmer said. The coroner spoke to one of Schueler’s brothers who said his deceased brother didn’t use the air conditioning simply “Because he didn’t want to”. He said his brother liked the climate. But Balmer said the heat is something everyone, especially elderly people, should take seriously. “The elderly are more susceptible to the heat than younger people,” Balmer said. “Some people don’t realize how the heat can take a toll on you.” Schueler was retired from Westinghouse Company in Bloomington, an Air Force veteran and a member of the Hobart Beach VFW Post 1693, Bonnie Sloan American Legion Post 28, Knights of Columbus Cardinal Ritter Council 1221 and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. He is survived by four brothers, Herbert C. Schueler of Owensboro, Ky., Francis S. Schueler of Lanesville, George A. Schueler Jr. and Donald J. Schueler, both of Corydon; and two sisters, Bernice Barr of Floyds Knobs and Mary L. Litch. Services are 10 a.m. tomorrow at the church with entombment in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park on Charlestown Road. A prayer service will be held today at 4 p.m. Visitation is noon to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Sinkhorn     NEW ALBANY DAILY LEDGER OBITUARY – 12/03/1921

. The sweet and tender notes of the singer were stilled forever, and hushed were the story of the love and the kindness of the Creator in the mouth of the evangelist, when death called suddenly and quickly to McClellan Sinkhorn, evangelist singer and choir leader of Main Street Methodist Episcopal Church, on Friday night in the home of friends in French Lick, where only last Sunday, the sweet singer of evangelism electrified and pacified the souls of many crowds. Mr. Sinkhorn’s death came as a shock to his countless friends, and even his own immediate ones were unable to reach his bedside until after the end. Five times on last Sunday did Mr. Sinkhorn, whose singing is well and favorably known in his home city of New Albany, sang in five of French Lick’s churches, carrying the message he loved to sing about. From this over-exertion and enthusiasm for the cause of his Master, pneumonia developed and within five days from the time his songs went out into the hearts of others, his own heart was stilled. It was not thought his condition was at first alarming and his own family was not called to his bedside until Friday morning and they reached there too late. Death came in the home of the Methodist minister at French Lick, Rev. J. B. Starr. McClellan Sinkhorn was a member of Main Street M. E. Church and the leader of the choir there. He was also a member of the Modern Woodmen. His home is at 1120 Ekin Avenue, where the funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. Rev. Howerton in charge. Burial at Fairview. The body will arrive tonight over the Monon and be taken to the home by Seabrooks & Peters, undertakers. Mr. Sinkhorn was a piano salesman by profession. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Ruth Sinkhorn, eight children, two brothers and one sister. The children are: William L. Sinkhorn of Indianapolis; and Mrs. Earl Menton and Leslie A., Merrill, Harold, Ethel, Lloyd and Catherine Sinkhorn, all of New Albany.     Sinkhorn     NEW ALBANY TRIBUNE OBITUARY – 11/25/1938

. Mrs. Ruth Baggerly Sinkhorn, 30, of 2145 East Elm Street, died at 7:30 o’clock Thursday night in St. Edward’s Hospital twelve hours after she allegedly fired a shotgun charge into her abdomen at the residence, according to police. Plainclothesman Dewey Boyd quoted her husband, Lloyd Sinkhorn, a veneer worker and prominent amateur baseball player, as saying she had been despondent for several months over failing health. Coroner Dr. Frank T. Tyler said he would hold an inquest. According to the husband’s statement to police, he heard the shot while he was still in bed and found his wife lying on the floor of an adjoining room. She apparently had leaned over the gun and pressed the trigger, he told police. Sinkhorn said his wife left their bed sometime during the night, presumably to load the weapon, a 20-gauge single-barrel gun, which he used for hunting. Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Jackie; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Baggerly, Borden; five sisters, Mrs. Bessie Trusty, Mrs. Geneva Radcliff and Mrs. Violet Radcliff, all of New Albany, and Mrs. Della Corn and Mrs. Ozena Miller, both of Pekin; two brothers, Everett Baggerly of Jeffersonville, and Albert Baggerly Jr., of Henryville.
