LaGrange County, - Indiana
LAGRANGE COUNTY FEDERAL CENSUS,
1860

The exact mechanics of taking the federal census in 1860 are unknown. The actual volumes used to record the information were large. It seems it would have been awkward for the assistant U.S. Marshals (as the census takers were
called) to carry these large books around the country to each household enumerated. It is surmised that information was gathered on other pieces of paper and transferred to the larger ledger. To further complicate the matter, two
copies of the ledger(s) were made into other ledgers. One ledger went to the census bureau in Washington, one ledger went to the state government, and the last ledger went to the county courthouse. No one knows which ledger went
where. What we do know is that very few of the ledgers that did not go to the federal governement still exist, at least in - Indiana. While doing an inventory of records at the Lagrange County courthouse, John J. Newman, then the - Indiana
State Archivist, discovered that the county copy of the 1860 federal population census for Lagrange County, - Indiana, was in the courthouse. The ledger was microfilmed by the - Indiana State Archives. A comparison was made of the
volume from the courthouse to the volume on the microfilm in the National Archives. The differences in the two census records are many. The township enumerations are in different orders, names are spelled differently, children
placed in different familes, and several pages that are in the county ledger copy are not on the film. Below are the entries that were either omitted from the film, or in which descrepancies appeared.
