Hardin, Maines, Kepple,
Laughner, Klingensmith families
of Boone and Marion Counties, IN Contact: John Mesinger [jfm6f@virginia.edu]
I regret not being interested in genealogy when my Hoosier relatives were alive. A local LDS library affiliate has been very helpful up to the point where the generations get older and difficult to sort out conflicting data. My Hardin and Laughner forebears tended to move from VA and PA through TN to IN. I used to visit those in Whitestown and Indianapolis many summers with my parents. I know some people have introduced errors into their net entries, such as someone reported my GGMa, Asenath Kepple, as the second wife of Jacob Harmon Laughner, rather than the mother of the children [Always check for multiple confirmations]. So many of my forebears were given biblical names; for those interested she was named in the bible - check it out in Egypt. So now to my questions: 1. Mary Minerva Maines, b.Feb 2 1859 in Pike Twp.a GGGma [daughter of Joseph Harrison Maines and Ann James] was the first of two wives of Charles Isaac Hardin, m. 15 Oct, 1879 in Wayne Twp. I think she died @ 1920. My questions are: when did she die and where is she buried? Any other information about her would be appreciated. I know she paid for a hernia operation for an uncle when he was a baby. 2. John Laughner was a farmer in Whitestown and is listed as being there in 1937. However, I was there then and his cousin, Martin Luther Laughner, operated the farm and from then on. John's widow may well have been living there then. Their three children apparently predeceased them. This is not a big deal but for the sake of accuracy I would like to know when he died and where he was buried. He was a powerful support of his sister, my grandmother, when her husband deserted the family sometime before 1910. 3. My unlamented grandfather, James Franklin [Frank] Hardin, b. 12 Oct, 1880. m. Maude Hardin 17 May, 1902 in Zionsville with his parents witnessing and signing off as Francis Harding. Does anyone know when and where he died or anything else about him after 1908? 4. Asenath Kepple's parents were Michael Kepple b. 2 Oct 1805 in Westmoreland Co, PA and d. 27 Jan 1883 in Pike Twp, Marion Co. He did marry again to Mary Heath 24 Feb 1876 with one son, Charles Kepple. His first wife was Mary Anna Klingensmith b. [stb] 1808 in Westmoreland Co PA and d.3 Feb 1870 m.1829 Does anyone know where they were buried? There are far too many children from this marriage on the net suggesting to me that the profusion of those surnames has created a problem [Just as my Hardin line was confused with a French Huguenot line from FR to NY to VA in the early 1700s. Ancestors of Kepple and Klingensmith were fruitful people and there appear to have been intermarriages of people with those names before this pair. My problem is not being able to definitely pin down the ancestry of Michael and Mary. Both names were common in the net listings. So does anyone know the correct number and names of the children of Michael and Mary? AND does anyone know the names of their parents? PS I miss my Hoosier visits. Yesterday I met a man who lives here, mentioned my cousin who went to Arsenal Tech HS in 1953 - so did he in the early 1930s, then on to Purdue where he was a life long friend of Don Burnham; that, while at Purdue I lived one year with the mayor of W. Lafayette, Charlie Burnham, the father of Don, who became president of Westinghouse and I met later when working in Pittsburgh. Small world! Thanks for any assistance I may receive. John |
