Indianapolis man dies after home break-in
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ~ An Indianapolis woman and her 12- year-old son were hospitalized in good condition Monday after two men broke into their home and shot them.
The woman, Barbara J. Gary, returned the fire, wounding one of the gunmen, who died later at a hospital
Thomas Francis, 28, died at 4:23 a.m. in Methodist Hospital of gun-shot wounds to the head and neck, hospital spokesman Jon White said.
Barbara Gary, 32, and her sons, Dennis A. Gary Jr. and another 2-year-old whose name was not immediately released, were at home about 5 p.m. Sunday when Francis and another man knocked at door and asked if Gary's husband, Dennis Gary Sr., was home, said Col. Ronald L. Chappell of the Marion County Sheriff Department.
When she told them her husband was not home, the men kicked in the door and started shooting, Chappell said.
Police believe Francis, armed with an automatic weapon, fired an unknown number of shots at Gary and her older son. She returned six shots with a rifle, hitting Francis in the head and neck.
The second intruder fled.
Police held a suspect for a short time but released him after the Garys could not positively identify him. Police said a witness saw the 45-year-old man leave the Gary house and followed him to another house.
