Tobey, Edwin W., 94, of Fort Lauderdale, FL, formerly of Indianapolis, died January 19. He developed commercial, industrial and residential real estate projects at Tobey Developers for 10 years, retiring in 1968. Previously, he was the owner and operator of Sky Harbor Airport for 10 years. Prior to that, he owned and operated Tobey Motors. Mr. Tobey was a former member of the Indianapolis Athletic Club Hillcrest Country Club, the 702 Club, the American Business Club, Quiet Birdmen, AOPA and various trade organizations. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps Ferry Command. Services: private. Survivors: daughters Nancy Glaskin, Fae Jessee; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren. Fairchild Funeral Home, Fort Lauderdale, FL is handling arrangements. Edwin W. Tobey, who owned auto dealerships and a private airport, died Friday at his home in Fort Lauderdale. He was 94. A native of Indianapolis, Ind., Tobey owned his first auto dealership there a Ford dealership, according to his daughter, Nancy Glaskin, of Columbus, Ohio. Tobey served in Army and was honorably discharged in 1944. Tobey then flew for the Ferry Command, a government agency, delivering aircraft to various war zones in Europe, his daughter said. Later, Tobey turned to the airline business and purchased Sky Harbor, a private airport in Indianapolis. Tobey, who kept a home in Fort Lauderdale for more than three decades, became a full-time Florida resident 14 years ago. He retired in 1988. He was born on Dec. 2, 1906, in Indianapolis. In addition to his daughter Nancy, he is survived by another daughter, Fae Jessee of Indianapolis; five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. A private service will be conducted. Arrangements are being handled by the Fairchild North Federal Funeral Home in Fort Lauderdale. |
