Today, the Salvation Army will bring new life to an old building that has long been part of the downtown landscape.
The charity will hold a groundbreaking ceremony at the old Barton Hotel, corner of Michigan and Delaware streets, to kick off a $9 million effort to develop 28 low-cost rental units in the abandoned building.
Officials hope to restore the former hotel's exterior to its original 1923 appearance. Once complete, the building will also include a domestic violence center and a children's program.
The hotel once catered to single men who moved to Indianapolis seeking work. The Salvation Army acquired the site in 1999.
