DAVIS

Al Davis Never Regained Consciousness After Hay Loft Tumble - Without having regained consciousness, Al Davis, the aged man who fell from a hay loft at the Lanum barn Wednesday night, died at the Bloomington Hospital at seven o'clock last evening. The fall produced concussion of the brain.  Davis was born in South Carolina in 1858 and came to Indiana during the Civil War. For many years he followed farming. His wife died September 22, 1909. The deceased is survived by two brothers, William and Zib, and a sister Mrs. Stout, in Indianapolis.  Funeral at Bethel Church tomorrow at ten o'clock in charge of the Rev. T. R. White. – Bloomington Evening World, 23 July 1910

Death stopped last night at a little cottage on the west side, and after days of suffering and destitution, called Effler Davis. He was a well known and honest working man and had been a victim of old-fashioned consumption since last summer. Out of work, the sick man with a wife, mother and one daughter to support were all soon in want. Trustee Walker helped them, and Sunday the body will be buried by charity in the Payne grave yard. Mr. Walker hopes some good-hearted people will help pay the expenses of the funeral and if they will phone him, he will come for the money. Davis was 28 years old. - Bloomington Telephone, 10 February 1914, Page 004.

The burial of Mrs. Robert Davis, who died at her home at McDoel, was at Clear Creek Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock.  There was no public funeral at the house because the children are sick with the measles. - Bloomington Telephone, 23 December 1913, Page 001 - as transcribed by James D. DOBSON

(From Thursday’s Daily) This afternoon at 2 o’clock the friends gathered quietly at the home on west 1st street, to pay a farewell tribute to Frank Dobson, a well known citizen who died yesterday.  It was a simple funeral and those about the casket mourned a loyal friend.  Rev. T. J. Clark, a playmate in boyhood days, gave a short talk in which he spoke of the honor of the dead.  The burial was beside the wife at Rose Hill, who preceded him to the tomb some six years ago. – Bloomington Telephone, 01 Jul 1904, page 001

DUNCAN

The papers of the State announced the sudden death of Judge H. C. Duncan at his home in Bloomington, on January 30. Judge Duncan was one of the most widely known and respected citizens of Monroe county, and probably engaged longer in the practice of law there than any one else in the county. He has long been active in all public interests. He served in the army during the Civil War and has been at the head of the local interests of the Grand Army of the Republic.  In historical circles, Judge Duncan is known as one of the leaders in the Monroe County Historical Society. He contributed an article upon Austin Seward to the September, 1908, number of this magazine, and a year later an article of his upon Judge James Hughes, was published. In both of these papers Judge Duncan showed a knowledge of the local history of the State and a sympathetic understanding of a type of life that is passing away among us, together with a literary skill that made him an honored member of the guild of historians. His death leaves us the poorer in the ability to recall and to describe the earlier life of our country. - Indiana Quarterly Magazine Volume VII 1911 - – shared by Barb Ziegenmeyer
