HANDY

The funeral of Mrs. Eliza Handy was held at the home at nine o'clock this morning in charge of the Rev. J. C. Todd.  The body was taken to Clear Creek for interment.  The pallbearers were: W. J. Dodds, William Bunger, Charles Springer, John J. Campbell, George Walker. - Bloomington Evening World, 05 May 1912, Page 001

HARRIS

William Harris, a well known young farmer of Benton Township, died Monday afternoon at his home 7 miles northeast of town of fever after a 3-weeks' illness. He was a son-in-law of William Anderson and leaves a wife and children. The remains were interred at Shiloh Church. – Bloomington Telephone, 20 December 1901

HATTON

"George W. Hatton Dies of Paralysis Sunday Morning. George W. Hatton, age 66, died at 2:55 a.m., Sunday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Carl Matthews, 521 West Wylie St. Death ended a two years' illness with paralysis. He is survived by the wife Rebecca Hatton, five daughters: Mrs. Carl Matthews [sic MATHEWS], Mrs. Golden Helms, Irene, Barbara, and May [sic MARY] Hattan; six sons, Arthur, Oscar, both of Bloomington, Thomas of Rockford, IL, Virgil and Melvin of Louisville, and Ora age 8 at home; one sister Mrs. Thomas Brown of this city; two brothers Marion and William Hatton of Freetown, IN. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 o'clock, Tuesday morning at the Clear Creek Church in charge of the Rev. Monroe Swindler with interment at Clear Creek Cemetery. HAWKINS

Alexander Hawkins, one of the oldest veterans of this county, died at 3:30 yesterday afternoon in his 77th year after an illness of many weeks. The funeral will be held from the Morton Street Church of Christ of which the deceased was a member, tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock, in charge of Elder Adamson and Rev. Clark, and burial at Rose Hill.  Mr. Hawkins was a soldier of both the Mexican and Civil wars, and was an upright, honorable citizen. His children are: Miranda McPike of Lawrence county, Mrs. Lizzie Campbell of Bloomington, Mrs. Sallie Voss of South  Dakota, Harry Hawkins of Heltonvillle, Mrs. Isis Helms of Terre Haute. He leaves two surviving sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Keifly of Iowa and Margaret Anderson of Sullivan, and one brother, Adam Hawkins of Terre Haute.  The G. A. R. will attend the funeral in a body.  There will be a call meeting of the G. A. R. tomorrow morning at nine o'clock in the hall. The purpose will be to make arrangements to attend the funeral of Alex Hawkins. The following pall bearers have been selected: Moses St. Clair, Thomas Eller, William Adams, Jacob Carmichael, William Hepley and Thomas Kilpatrick. – Bloomington World, 14 July 1905

HAYS

Mrs. Hays, 82, Dies in Her Home       -Mrs. Anne Hays, 82, widow of John W. Hays, died today in her home, 318 S. Euclid, following an illness of two months.  Mr. Hays died in 1952.  Life resident of Monroe County, Mrs. Hays, was the daughter of David and Amanda (Deckard) Hays.  She was a member of the Burgeon Friendship Baptist Church.  She and her husband, who was a farmer, formerly lived on Route 8.  Survivors are two sons, Thurman Hays, Johnstown, Colo. And Henry Hays, Bloomington, principal of Unionville High School; a daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Terrell of Route 3,; three brothers, Otto Hays, and Dillon Hays, both of Bloomington, and Curtis Hays, Ellettsville Rd; three sisters, Mrs. Ida Peterson, Route 8; Mrs. Dora Blackwell, Bloomington, and Mrs. Ella Johnson, Bedford; 14 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.  Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Clear Creek Church with burial in the adjoining cemetery.  Rev. W. C. Chafin and Rev. Jason Skinner of Nashville will officiate, and the Elkins quartet will sing.  Pallbearers will be Lester Terrell, Joseph Floyd, Ray Reeves, David hays, Clarence Hensley and Roy Chambers.  Flower bearers will be Glodene Chambers, Pauline Floyd, Mary Ellen Terrell, Thelma Wallner, Ellen Lutes and Patty Goodman.  The body remains at the Allen Funeral Home where friends may call. – The Bloomington Herald Telephone, 17 May 1956, Page 10.

 

John Hays Succumbs At His Home - John W. Hays, age 81, died last night at 9:30 at his home on R. 8.  He had suffered a stroke Wednesday.  A well-known farmer, Mr. Hays was a member of the Burgeon Baptist Church and was born April 13, 1871 in Monroe County, the son of William and Winnie Norman Hays.  Survivors include the wife, Anna, two sons, Thurman of Johnstown Colo., and Harry H. Hays, principal of Unionville High School; a daughter Mr. Myrtle Terrell, R. 8; a brother, Isaac Hays, of Bloomington; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Carrothers and Mrs. Flora Sluss, Bloomington and 14 grandchildren.  The body will lie in state at the Allen Chapel.  Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Clear Creek Church.  W. C. Chafin and Rev. Jason Skinner will officiate. Pallbearers will be Joe Floyd, Lester Terrell, Roy Chambers, Clarence Hensley, David hays and Ray Reeves.  Flower bearers will be Glodene Chambers, Harriet Hensley, Pauline Floyd, Arlena Deckard, Joe Wollner, and Mary Ellen Terrell. – Bloomington Herald Telephone, 27 September 1952, Page 10

HILL

Mrs. Jala Hill, a former resident of the Knight Ridge neighborhood, died Wednesday evening in Indianapolis.  Death was due to a complication of diseases.  Her husband, Perry Hill, who died about six years ago, was a brother of Levi Hill of this city.  Four children survive.  They are: Mrs. Clarence Boyd, Mrs. Houston Pitzer, and Nat W. Hill of Indianapolis and Loble Hill of South Bend. Funeral rites will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon from the Knight Ridge Cemetery.  Monroe Swinder will be in charge. - Bloomington Telephone,  Thursday, 29 September 1932

HINKLE

Mr. Hinkle, (Jonathan J. ) who resided north of town, died on Friday night last in his 80th year.  He had been confined to his bed four or five weeks. – Bloomington Republican Progress, 28 June 1882, Page 003

HOUGH

While seated in a chair at his home three and one half miles north of Dolan at eight o'clock this morning, Lewis HOUGH, a son of former Sheriff Benton HOUGH, fell dead to the floor. Mrs. Hough was attending to feeding the cattle at the barn and was notified by one of her children that Mr. Hough had fallen to the floor. He had been suffering from heart trouble for the past fifteen years but was able to be about most of the time. He was 28 years old and was married to Ada Lentz. He is survived by the widow and three children, the oldest nine years and the youngest six weeks old.  Coroner Kentling was called from Smithville to view the body and make out the necessary burial permit.  Funeral at 1:30 Friday at Bethel Church. – Bloomington Weekly Courier, 9 February 1912, Page 001

HOWARD

After a lingering illness with tuberculosis, Mrs. Clarence Howard died at her home at Chapel Hill Thursday afternoon. The deceased leaves a husband and two children, aged four years and one year respectively. Her maiden name was Eads and four brothers, Henry Jacob, John and George Eads and two sisters, Mrs. Will Bartlett and Mrs. William Nikirk mourn her departure.
