Elias Phipps In Defense of His Mother. Boone, IA, July 13.— Elias Phipps of Mary (should be Marcy) township was shot by his 14-year-old son last night. Phipps came home drunk and was beating his wife, when the boy took a musket and shot his father in the back. Phipps is still alive, but will die. The boy is in jail. There is a marriage record for an Elias Phipps to Mary S. Abott in May 19, 1876 – Boone, Iowa. - Elias (age 24) and Mary (age 19) are shown in the 1880 Marcy Towns, Boone Co, Iowa Census with children William H. age 3 and Ethel age 9 months. In the 1885 Iowa State census Elias age 29, Mary age 23, William H. age 8, Emma E. age 5, Arthur age 3. Elias Phipps is not found in the 1900 census for Boone county, so suspect shooting took place between 1891-1900} Submitted by Dawn Minard
