Obituaries from Boone County, IowaDavid Clark "David Clark, 84, retired car inspector for the Chicago North Western railroad in Boone died at the Boone County Hospital Monday afternoon following an illness of about a year. Mr. Clark had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Reese Hall, 221 Benton St, (in Boone, IA.) since the death of his wife about nine years ago. Other survivors than Mrs. Hall are three daughters, Mrs. Harley (Mildred) Jorgenson, Tracy, Minn., Mrs. Harley (Hazel) Taylor, Des Moines, and Mrs. Richard (Florence) Grace, Kalamazoo, Mich., five grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Schroeder funeral home is in charge of the services. Funeral services will be Thursday afternoon at 2PM from the funeral home with the Rev. Merwin Coad, pastor of the Central Church of Christ, in charge. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery." (Boone, IA) Dr. Edwin A Briggs, minister of the First Methodist Church gave the sermon.... ......Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Estella Mae Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Smith, was born in Lockridge, Jefferson County, Iowa on 3-10-1880 and passed away at the Boone Co. Hospital on July 13, 1945 at the age of 65 years, 4 months and 3 days. Her entire childhood and youth were spent in the home in Jefferson Co. She was united in marriage to David Clark on 12-25-1899. With the exception of one year spent at Kalamazoo, Mich the rest of her life was spent in Boone. She was a member of Unit #3 of the Women's Society of Christian Service, and a member of the Berean Sunday school class of the First Methodist Church. There remains to mourn her passing, her husband; her mother, Mrs. A.G. Smith of Kalamazoo; four daughters, Mrs. Hazel Thomas, Mrs. Ethel Hall, Mrs. Mildred Jorgensen, all of Boone, and Mrs. Florence Grace of Kalamazoo, Mich; also 3 sisters, six brothers, and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, who passed away in 1939." (Wife of David Clark) [from a Boone County Newspaper Thomas Gordon Thomas Gordon, an old time Galenian, and former proprietor of Gordon’s Ferry landing, died at his home in Boone, Iowa, on the 13th inst., aged 80 years. His remains were brought back to Galena for interment last Friday. The deceased came to Galena in 1839, and removed from thence to Boone about ten years ago. Mr. Gordon was a good and honest man, and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. Jackson Sentinel, Maquoketa, Jackson County, Iowa, February 4, 1886 Capt. W. W. Nixon Capt. W. W. Nixon, a prominent citizen of Boone county, died at his home in Boone on the 21st of May. He was a gallant officer of the Union Army in the War of the Rebellion, serving in the 33d Ohio Infantry. After the close of the war he removed to Boone county, Iowa, which has since been his home. He was Mayor of Boone two terms, and in 1873 was appointed by President Grant, Collector of Internal Revenue for the Sixth District, which embraced about one-fourth of the counties in the State. He was an able and faithful officer, and an excellent and highly esteemed citizen. [Annuals of Iowa, July 1893, submitted by Cathy Danielson] Mrs Fred Edmunds and Mrs. Orval Nordstrom Double Funeral Here Saturday The double funeral services for a Boone mother and daughter will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the First Methodist church here, with Rev. E. D. Rapp of the Primitive Methodist church in charge. Mrs. Fred Edmunds, 76, died Wednesday evening at her home after a long illness, her death coming shortly after that of her daughter, Mrs. Orval Nordstrom, 43, who passed away in Broadlawns hospital in Des Moines. Both were members of the Primitive Methodist Church here, but because it was thought the church would not accommodate the crowd for a double service, it was decided to hold the rites in the First Methodist church. [Submitted by Connie Wallukait] Mrs. Orval Nordstrom Mrs. Orval Nordstrom, 327 Benton street, who has been a patient at Broadlawns hospital suffering with incethalitis, a central nerve disorder, died there about 1 p.m. today. She is survived by her husband and two sons, John and Robert of Boone; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Edmunds of Boone; two brothers, Roy Edmunds of Clinton and Harry Edmunds of Des Moines, and five sisters, Mrs. Frank Shuey, Mrs. Wilbur Maakstead, Mrs. Oral Clark and Mrs. Orland Nordstrom, all of Boone, and Mrs. Verne Carr of Ames. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. [Submitted by Connie Wallukait] August Gustaf Nordstrom b: 27 Nov 1878 Moingona, Boone Co., Iowa (birth date according to Augustana Church Register, Boone Co., Iowa) Native of Moingona worked as a miner and for C. & N. W. He was never married August Nordstrom's funeral services were held May 21 at 2 p.m., at Welin's chapel in charge of the Rev. G. Harvey Sutton, pastor of Central Church of Christ. Neighbors, friends and relatives gathered to pay their last respects to the deceased's memory. Mrs. Graham Lane and Miss Maxine Winter, accompanied by Mrs. G. Harvey Sutton at the organ, sang "Face to Face," "Rock of Ages," and "Abide with Me." In charge of the floral tributes were Mesdames Glen Barrett and Frank Shuey. Pallbears were H. R. Dickinson, Helmer Holmberg, Henry Stemmerman, Albert Johnson, Allie Holmberg and Clarence Stout. Interment was in Linwood Park cemetery, east. Born at Moingona August Nordstrom, son of John Erick and Matilda (Holmberg) Nordstrom, was born in Moingona, Iowa, September 16, 1877 and passed away May 19, 1937. Age 59 years, 8 months and 3 days. For the last 10 years he had been in the service of the C. & N. W. railway. Formerly in his early life he was employed in the coal mines. He had resided in Boone all his life, making his home with his brother, John and family until two years ago. He was never married. He leaves to mourn his departure, four nephews, LeRoy, Orval, and Russell Nordstrom of Boone, and William Nordstrom of Des Moines, and a host of friends. Nordstrom, This City Word Received of Death but No Details Given Has Many Friends in This City Who Will be Grieved to learn of her Demise - Husband Killed in Mine Accident Word was received in this city this morning by J. W. Nordstrom of No. 615 Tenth Street, telling of the death of his sister-in-law. Mrs. Elsie Nordstrom, of Peoria, Ill. No details as to the cause of her death were given, but the burial will take place in Des Moines August 1st. She leaves a son three years old. Fred Nordstrom, husband of the deceased passed away three years ago. He was killed in a mine in Des Moines, as friends in this city will recall. The many friends of Mrs. Nordstrom in Boone will be grieved to learn of her demise. [The News Republican - Boone, Iowa, Tuesday, July 30, 1918 Fred Morton (Nordstrom) Seriously Injured in Fall of Slate Fred Morton was seriously if not fatally injured at 11 o'clock this morning by a fall of slate at the mine of the Des Moines Coal company near the Iowa Portland cement plant. One of his arms was broken, and he is suffering from severe internal injuries. Morton lives at Ninth and Locust street. He was taken to Mercy hospital. Nordstrom received a message from Des Moines Saturday noon, announcing the the sudden death of his brother, Fred Nordstrom, death was caused by an accident of some kind, but no particulars were given. July 1, 1915, The Boone News-Republican Fall of Slate Proved Fatal Funeral services for the late Fred Nordstrom, brother of John Nordstrom resident of Boone. Fred was working near Des Moines when a fall of slate weighing three and one half tons caught him. The funeral of the late Fred Nordstrom of Des Moines, brother of John W. Nordstrom of this city, was held from the home of the deceased Monday afternoon. The services were conducted by the Pastor of the Christian Church. Interment was in that city. Mr. Nordstrom was killed last Saturday while working in a mine when three and a half tons of slate fell on him. He was taken to Mercy Hospital but died shortly after reaching there. Submitted by Connie Wallukait John Erick Nordstrom John Nordstrom, an aged resident of the city, passed away at the home of his son, John Nordstrom Jr., 615 Tenth street at 6:00 o'clock Thursday evening. Death was due to old age and a complication of troubles. The funeral services wereheld from the Swedish Lutheran Church at 3:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Randolph, burial in Linwood Park Cemetery. [Boone County Democrat, Thursday March 26, 1914 Leroy Nordstrom Leroy Nordstrom died suddenly Wednesday at 10:45 o'clock at his home, 1409 - 12th street following a heart attack. He was 51 years old. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Maude Nordstrom, and two brothers, Russell and Orval, all of Boone. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Schroeder Funeral home with Dr. A. M. Clarke in charge. Burial will be in Linwood park cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning Friday. (handwritten note at bottom of page reads: Leroy Howard Nordstrom) [Submitted by Connie Wallukait] Orville Nordstrom Former Resident Dies, Cherokee Orville Nordstrom, 59, a former Boone resident, died Sunday evening, August 25, at Cherokee, Iowa, where he had been making his home. Mr. Nordstrom was a World War II veteran and a retired car repairman for the Chicago and North Western Railroad. Survivors include two sons, Jack of Marshalltown and Robert of Boone; one brother, Russell, of Boone and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 28, at 3:30 p.m. at the Schroeder Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray M. Baker of Boone officiating. Friends may begin calling at the funeral home Tuesday evening. Burial will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery. Orval Daniel Nordstrom, son of John and Maude Nordstrom, was born at Boone, Iowa, April 23, 1904 and passed away at Clarion, Iowa, August 25, 1963. Having attained the age of 59 years, 4 months, and 16 days. He united in marriage with Bessie Jane Edmunds, on May 10, 1921, at Boone, Iowa. To this union three sons were born; John, Robert, and Richard. Most of his life was spent in and around Boone. He was employed by the Chicago & Northwestern Railway Company for thirty years, serving as a car inspector. After the death of his wife he moved to Clarion, Iowa where he operated a small resort for a number of years. Some of his lifelong hobbies and interests were hunting, fishing and boat building. He was affiliated with the Methodist Church and served in the Armed Forces of World War II in the Constructin Batallion service. A member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and the Brotherhood of Railway Car Men. Of his parental family, only his brother Russell of Boone remains. He was proceeded in death also by his son Richard in 1926 and his wife Bessie on Aug. 10, 1949. Remaining of his immediate relatives are his sons: John of Marshalltown, Iowa and Robert of Boone, Iowa. There are six grandchildren - Nancy, John, Sue, Steven, Debora, and Robert, and a nephew William Nordstrom of Webster City, Iowa. Nordstrom Deceased was retired Coal Miner, having spent most of his life in Boone County. Burial at Bluff Creek. Funeral services for the late Richard Nordstrom were held Tuesday afternoon, June 16, at 1:30 o'clock at the Lawrence funeral home with the Rev. L. L. Collns, pastor of the Primitive Methodist church in charge. A number of sorrowing relatives and friends assembled for the last rites. The pastor spoke words of comfort to the bereaved group. Hymns sung during the services by Mrs. Frank Williams were "Under His Wing", "Beautiful Garden of Prayer", and "My Faith Looks Up to Thee". The soloist was accompanied by Mrs. L. L. Collins. Interment took place in the Bluff Creek cemetery where the late Mr. Nordstrom was laid to rest beside his wife who preceded him in death. Those serving as pallbearers were William McBirnie, John Clark, Arthur Conway, Robert Love, Adam Sellers and George Pratt. Life Sketch Richard Nordstrom, son of John E. and Mathilda (Carlson) Nordstrom, was born in Boone county, Iowa, June 22, 1871, one of a family of several children. His youth and early manhood were spent in Boone and surrounding communities, where most of the time he was employed as a coal miner in the Boone and Des Moines, Iowa mines, later moving to Peoria, Illinois, where he spent several years. He again returned to Boone where his brothers resided. He was united in marriage to Mary Munson, September 4, 1901. She passed away nine years later. He was of a happy though quiet disposition, and enjoyed doing kind deeds for others whenever possible. Having no children of his own, he especially enjoyed the companionship of a nephew, who had been left an orphan at an early age. In Poor Health For the past few years Mr. Nordstrom's health had been slowly failing, while there seemed to be nothing medical aid could do for him, and on Sunday morning, June 14, 1936 he passed away suddenly at the Boone county home. His age at passing was 64 years, 11 months and 22 days. The sadness of bereavement for his immediate relatives was doubly great by the passing of his brother, John Nordstrom, on the same day, Sunday, at 4 o'clock in the afternoon while Richard's passing was in the forenoon on Sunday. His father, mother and several brothers and sisters have preceded him in death a number of years ago. Those remaining to mourn his loss are his brother Gust of Boone, Iowa, several nephews, other relatives and friends. [The Boone News Republican, Boone, Iowa, Monday June 15, 1936 R. He had been in failing health for the past year having retired from active service as switchman for the C&NW Ry. Russell R. Nordstrom Russ Nordstrom Dies Thursday Russell R. Nordstrom, 57, 1116 Story street, died this Thursday morning, Oct. 8 following a lengthy illness. He is a retired carman for the Chicago North Western railroad and a veteran of World War II. Survivors include two nephews Robert of Boone and Jack of Marshalltown. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. from the Schroeder Funeral home with burial in Linwood park cemetery. Friends may call at Schroeder Funeral home starting Friday. Funeral services for Russell Roger Nordstrom were held at the Schroeder Funeral Home, Boone, Iowa, Saturday, Oct. 10, 1964 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Dwight C. Bonham, pastor of the Prairie Center Community Methodist Church, officiating. Mrs. Willis Curell, solosit, was accompanied by Mrs. Lewis Ross. Pallbears were William Ferry, Robert Harvey, Percy Barry and Waldo Hagaleen. Burial was at the Linwood Park cemetery. Russell Roger Nordstrom, son of John and Maude Nordstrom, was born in Boone, Iowa, April 13, 1907 and died at Boone, Iowa, Oct. 6, 1964 at the age of 57 years, 3 months and 21 days. Mr. Nordstrom, a carpenter and crane operator for Bridge and Builder on the C. and N. W. Ry., had been a resident of Boone, Iowa, all of his life. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. His hobbies were fishing and boat building. Mr. Nordstrom was preceded in death by his parents; and 2 brothers, Roy in 1950 and Orval in 1963. Survivors include 2 nephews, Jack of Marshalltown and Bob of Boone; and 1 cousin, Bill of Webster City. (handwritten note at bottom of page reads: Nov. 17, 1964) Edward Schoonover Death of Edward Schoonover Edward Schoonover, one of the earliest and best know citizens of Boone, died at the residence of his sister, Mrs. Hattie Burgess, in Omaha, September 14th and the remains were brought to Boone, Monday, September 15th, 1902. Mr. Schoonover was the oldest brother of Chas. Schoonover and Mrs. Phil Pickering of this city, of John U. Schoonover of Reno county, Kan. and of Mrs. Burgess of Omaha. A younger brother, George an old soldier, formerly editor of the Story County Reveille, and recorder of Story county, died in Nevada about 1868. Edward Schoonover was born in Tioga county, N.Y. in the early 1840’s, coming as far west as Ohio. They came to Oskaloosa in 1855, and in 1856 to Nevada. In 1862-3-4-5 Mr. Schoonover was with the dry goods firm of Leach and Wood of Marshalltown, but came to Boone in 1866. While in Boone he was part of the time employed in a clothing store, and part of the time a member of the firm of Ives & Schoonover, druggist. In 1871 he went to Topeka, Kansas, where he spent about then years. Several years more were spent in Kansas at Abaline and Clay Center, until about 1888, when both he and his wife joined the family of his sister, Mrs. Burgess, in Salt Lake City. In 1890 both families came to Omaha where they have resided ever since. About eight years ago his wife died and was buried in Linwood cemetery. He was married in N.Y., but no children were ever born to them. Mr. Schoonover was rather short of stature, always tidily and neatly dressed, and very social and companionable with all acquaintances. None remember him but with the most kindly feelings. The bearers who conveyed him to his last resting place in the Boone cemetery were his personal friends of over 30 years ago, as follows: Henry Goeppinger, A. P. Fogg, Hawley Main, Chas. Tucker, J. R. [Haven Weekly Journal, Haven, Reno County, Kansas, Saturday, October 4, 1902, pg 1, col. 3, submitted by Rose Stout] James Sellers James Sellers, son of John and Martha Sellers, was born Dec. 18, 1876 in Scotland and departed this life on Dec. 21,1953 in the Boone Co. Hospital at the age of 77 years and three days. At the age of 4 years, he came with his parents to the United States. He stopped for a year or so in Pennsylvania and then came to Boone Co. where lived the remainder of his life. He was one of a family of 12 children. He had 9 brothers and 2 sisters. When he was eleven years old, he began working in the coal mines with his father and brothers. He retired from the mines in 1948 having spent 60 years at this work. He was united in marriage to Margaret Young on Feb. 28, 1905 and to this union 10 children were born, five sons and five daughters. Mr. Sellers was a member of the Marion St. Methodist Church and devoted his life to his home and family. He made many friends in his life although he spent the greater part of his time at home enjoying his hobby of gardening. [from a Boone County Newspaper Margaret Sellers MRS J. SELLERS FUNERAL RITES Funeral services for Mrs. James Sellers were held Saturday, June 16, at the Marion St. Methodist Church with Rev. Garold B. Noland officiating, assisted by Rev. T. J. Pettit. Mrs. John Shelley sang "Beyond the Sunset" and Rev. Pettit sang "Have Thine Own Way" with accompaniment by Mrs. George Erickson. Flowers were in charge of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Sinclair, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Rose, Mrs. Walter Kiddie, and Mrs. Albert Gill. Pallbearers were six nephews: Robert Sellers, Marlin Sellers, Mantford Price, John Price, Darrell Young, and John Sellers. Interment was at Linwood Park Cemetery. LIFE SKETCH Margaret Edna Young, daughter of Albert E. and Jeanette Young was born May 17, 1884 near Yankton, S.D. and died at the Boone Co. Hospital at Boone, Ia. Wednesday, June 13, 1951, at the age of 67 years and 26 days. She was one of seven children. When a small child she moved to Boone County with her parents and had lived in the community up to the time of her death. She attended rural schools in the county and Boone High School and later taught school for two years. She was united in marriage with James Sellers Feb. 18, 1905. Ten children were born to the union, five sons and five daughters. She was a member of the Women's Relief Corp No. 12, the Art and Embroidery Club, the Wscs, and a member of the Marion St. Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and two grandchildren. Survivors include the widower; five daughters, Mrs. Harry Bricker of Boone, Mrs. Ronald Steffy of Maywood, Ill, Mrs. Lawrence Kelsey of Davenport, Ia, Mrs Randall Petersen of Boone, and Mrs. Clifford Sparks of Los Angeles, Ca; five sons, Howard of Janesville, Wisc, James of Boone, Walter of Stratford, Dean of the Marine Corp, and Dan of the US Navy; three sisters, Mrs. Robert Price and Mrs. Alexander Sellers, both of Boone, and Mrs. Earl Wolfe of Fort Wayne, Ind; a brother, Mantford Young of Boone; and 13 grandchildren. SELLERS LAID TO REST AT BLUFF CREEK The funeral services for the late Mrs. Martha Sellers, who passed away at the home of her son, William Sellers, on Monday night, after an illness of several months, was held at 1pm, Thursday from the residenceand 1:30pm from the Marion St. M. E. Church. The Rev. L. E. Viets assisted by the Rev. G.H. Miller had charge. Interment was made at Bluff Creek Cem. west of the Des Moines River......... LIFE SKETCH Mrs. Martha (Thompson) Sellers, daughter of Gilbert and Margaret Thompson, was born in Scotland, March 30, 1850 and passed away Jan. 16, 1928, making her 77 years, nine months, and 16 days at the time of her death. She was one of a family of 16 children. She came to America at the age of 20 years and was united in marriage to John Sellers, September 10, 1870 at Corning, NY. To this union were born 12 children. Mr. Sellers met an accidental death in the mines Nov. 2, 1892. Four children have preceded her in death. Those remaining to mourn her passing are 8 sons.... Mr. and Mrs. Sellers resided in the state of Pa for a number of years, coming to Iowa in 1885. They located in the place known as Incline, living in the vicinity of Boone ever since. In the 1889 she accepted Christ as her Saviour and united with the Baptist Church and had lived a true and devoted christian life ever since. She took a great interest in church and Sunday school work wherever she happened to be. Besides her immediate family she leaves a number of other relatives, nieces and nephews, including five brothers and one sister; namely Arthur Thompson of Des Moines, Ia and Sandy Thompson of Boone, and three brothers and one sister, who live in Scotland, and also a sister-in-law Mrs. Ellen Thompson of Boone. She also leaves thirty grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. All will greatly miss her. [from a Boone County Newspaper Andrew G. Smith A.G. Smith funeral rites held near Fairfield. Son, Roy Smith, resides in Boone. "Funeral services for a former Boone Y.M.C.A. secretary, Andrew G. Smith were held 10-17-1939 at the Lockridge Baptist Church near Fairfield Iowa. Roy C Smith is a son of Mrs. David Clark who is a daughter of the deceased, and with Mr. Smith and Mrs. Clark attended the last rites. Andrew G. Smith familiarly known as "Gust Smith" was born on the Smith Homestead two miles north of Lockridge on 9-8-1851. He departed this life at his home in Decatur, Mich 10-14-1939. His age was 88 years and one month and 6 days. He resided in Jefferson Co until 1912 removing to Boone county, Ia., and later to Kalamazoo and Decatur, Mich. where after a short illness he answered the final summons. In early years he was confirmed in the first Swedish Lutheran Church at Four Corners, his mother and father Eric and Catherine Smith being charter members of that church, the first Swedish Lutheran church founded in the U.S. He was united in marriage to Marion Allerdice 8-4-1874 to which union were born eleven children, ten of whom, with wife and mother, survive him, mourning the loss of an ideal husband and father. The sons and daughters are: WC Smith and EA Smith of Fairfield, Mrs. David Clark and Roy C Smith of Boone, Mrs. OR Thompson of Kalamazoo, Mich., Harry C Smith of Des Moines, Mrs. LR Sandburg of Burlington, Mrs. HM Wilder of Ionia, MIch., and David and Ward Smith of Decatur Mich. Two brothers EA Smith of Fairbanks Alaska and David of Smiths Mill Minn., and one sister Mrs. Sara McIntosh of Mount Pleasant, survive. Thers are also 24 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren." George Robert Thomas "Funeral services for the late George Robert Thomas were held Saturday, Nov. 30 from the Schroder Funeral Home with Dr. E A Briggs, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, in charge. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery. George Robert Thomas was born in Moingona, IA 2-17-1897, and died at the Veteran's Hospital in Des Moines, IA 11-28-1940 at the age of 43 years, 9 months and 11 days. He was the son of John and Isabelle Thomas. He moved to Boone with his parents when he was a boy. July 7, 1921, he was married to Hazel Clark. To this union were born three children, Bill Dean, Marjorie Elaine, and Joan Lee, all of whom survive him. He is also survived by three sisters, Elizabeth Hardie and Katherine Yeager of Salem, Oregon, and Helen Nolan of Portland, Oregon, and two half brothers, William and Arthur Thomas. One sister, Mary Deal and a half brother, Alf, being deceased. He was a World War One Veteran and had been employed by the Iowa Electric Light and Power Co for 24 years. During the years he had lived in Boone he made countless friends and was loved and honored by all who knew him. His life was built around his family toward whom all his love and devotion was directed. He entered the Veteran's Hospital 10-21-1940, and during this time was frequently visited by an old friend, the Rev. Harry Herlein of the United Brethren Church to whom he gave his confidence. Mr. Thomas is also survived by a host of other relatives and friends who extend sincere sympathy in this time of bereavement." [from a Boone County Newspaper John W. Thomas JOHN W. THOMAS, FOR YEARS EMPLOYED BY THE NORTHWESTERN, PASSES AWAY John W. Thomas was born in South Wales 1-30-1852 and died at his home in Boone 3-4-1915, being 63 years, 1 month, and 5 days old. The deceased came to America with his parents when but a boy, first settling in Pennsylvania, and later moved to Iowa and settled in Moingona. May 25, 1874 he married Elizabeth Carswell. To this union were born 3 children, WJ Thomas of New York City and Alfred W Thomas and Arthur Thomas of Boone. His wife Elizabeth died 9-10-1888 and he was married to Isabelle Sandilands on 11-20-1890. To this union were born 5 children, Katherine Yeager of Westmore, Montana, Elizabeth, Mary, Helen, and George of Boone. The deceased is survived by a wife, 4 sons, 4 daughters and one brother. The funeral was held at the home of 8th street at ten thirty am. and the family and friends accompanied the body to the deceased's old home, Moingona. The services were conducted at the Presbyterian Church at one thirty, the Rev. JC Crawford of Boone in charge. He spoke from the text in John 14th. The choir composed of Mrs. Ericson, Mrs. Roadstrom, and Miss North sang "Rock of Ages", "Blest Be the Tie That Binds", and "it is Well With My Soul". The pallbearers were Messrs. JW Peacock, William Parks, Lincoln Rule, and James Egan, all close friends of the family. Interment was made in Moingona Cemetery. [from the Boone County Democrat 3-11-1915 page 3 Mary Thomas ANOTHER PIONEER IS GONE Mrs. Mary Thomas died Friday afternoon at 3:40 after an illness from grip, which developed into pneumonia. Mrs. Thomas was 91 years, 5 months, and 16 days old. Mrs. Thomas had retained a clear mind, and comparitively good sight and hearing, and was, until her last illness spry and active. She was a pioneer of Boone County, and lived at Moingona for about 30 years, she and her husband going to that place about the time the mines were opened there. Mrs. Thomas' maiden name was Williams. She was born in Wales and married there. In 1860 she and her husband came to this country, and for some time lived at Pittsburgh, PA. Later they moved to Moingona. Seventeen years ago Mr. Thomas died and since then Mrs. Thomas has made her home in Boone with her son, J.W. Thomas, at 1215 Eighth Street. Mrs. Thomas leaves two sons, J.W. Thomas of Boone and A.W. Thomas of Seattle, Wash. Thomas Thomas, a third son, was killed twelve years ago at Missouri Valley while switching in the yards. A daughter, Mary Ann died about fifty years ago. FUNERAL The funeral will be in the Presbyterian Church at Moingona Sunday afternoon, the service conducted by the Re. O.H.L. Mason. Burial at Moingona. The funeral procession will leave the residence in Boone at 12:30 PM. [From the Boone County Democrat, 4-3-1908, page 8 Alfred Williams [Father of Jeanetta Williams Young, above) Alfred Williams, of Dodge township, one of the earliest settlers of Boone county, died Thursday, aged 65. He came to Boone county in 1847, first settling near Madrid, but moved to his late home in Dodge township the following year. He saw many changes in Boone County and Iowa. he served three years during the war in the Sixteenth Iowa and at the time of his death was a member of J G Miller Post GAR. The remains were taken to the Elk Rapids cemetery, near Madrid, for interment. [Boone County Democrat, 11-14-1894 p3 Caroline Underhill Williams (Wife of Alfred Williams) Caroline Underhill, was born October 17, 1836, and came to Iowa in an early day. She was married to Alfred Williams April 15, 1852. To them were born five children, the oldest Margaret Ellen, who passed away in 1857, Mrs. Jeanette Young, who died November 16, 1904, Mrs. George Hull, who resides in Boone, Daniel Henry, who passed away March 11, 1911, and Callie, who has always resided at home with her mother and cared for her. She leaves to mourn her death besides her two daughters, 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, and an aged brother in Mound City, Kansas, besides a host of relatives and friends. She had been a resident of Boone County for more than fifty years and resided at Elk Rapids, Madrid, and Fraser from which place she passed away Wednesday evening, March 22. She was a sweet lovable woman and to know her was to love her. This makes it doubly sad for the bereaved ones as less than a week ago that they buried their brother. The funeral services were held from the home in Fraser Friday at 2:00 o'clock pm, conducted by the Rev. Charles Davis. The house was filled to overflowing with the many friends and neighbors showing the esteem in which she was held. The remains were then taken to Boone Saturday morning on the Interurban car and from there to Madrid over the Milwaukee where they were met by their many friends. The remains were then taken to Elk Rapids cemetery, three miles west of Madrid, and laid to rest beside her husband. A token of esteem in which she was held in Madrid was shown by their services in the singing and the entertainment of the friends from Fraser. The floral tributes were many and beautiful. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of all who know them. Boone County Democrat, Mar 31, 1911page 6 Albert B Young "Albert B Young, eldest son of Hubbard and Emily Young was born near Montreal, Canada, 8-10-1851, and passed away Sunday, May 19, 1946, at the age of 94. He died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Robert Price, where he made his home for the past 20 years. On November 10, 1878, he was united in marriage to Jeanette Williams and to this union seven children were born. He was preceded in death by his wife, who died in 1903, and by his eldest son, Allie, who died May 15, 1946. At an early age, he came from Canada to Wisconsin in a covered wagon with his father and mother. When a young man, he moved to Iowa where he spent the remainder of his life. Being a man of many activities, he will be missed by his many friends in West Boone, where he was a familiar figure. Mr. Young was the last surviving member of a family of ten. Surviving him are two sons, Walter J Young of Des Moines, and Mantford A Young of Boone, four daughters, Mrs Robert Price, Mrs James Sellers, Mrs Alex Sellers, and Mrs Earl Wolfe of Milwaukee, Wis., besides 32 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews." (Father of Margaret Young, above. [from a Boone County Newspaper Emily Yates Young (Mother of Albert Young) Mrs. Emily Yates Young was born in Canada 1-31-1826 and died in Moingona,Ia April 8th 1914. She was 88 years, 2 months, and 8 days. She grew to womanhood and was married in Canada to Halbert Young in 1846. To this union were born 11 children of which but 4 are living. From Canada the family moved to Wisconsin, from there to Minnesota, in 1872 moved to Dakota, and in 1880 they came to Boone Co. Ia. where they have since resided. Mr. Young, the husband, passed away some years ago. While in Dakota she made profession of the Christian religion and lived faithful to the end. The funeral took place Saturday morning at ten in the Welin Undertaking Parlors. The sermon was preached by Rev. A. L. Golden of the Marion St. M.E. Church. The music was furnished by Mrs. Ada Nutt, Miss Jessie Templin, and Mrs. Elsie Lawrence who sang "Rock of Ages", "Jesus Savior Pilot Me", and "Shall We Meet Beyond the River". The pallbearers were young men acquaintences from Moingona. The interment took place at the Mineral Ridge Cemetery beside the husband. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at one o'clock from the house. Services by Rev. J C Crawford. Burial will be in East Linwood Cemetery. Mrs. Jeanetta Young was born in Elk Rapids, Ia. and at the time of her death was (48) years, 9 months, and 24 days old. She has lived most of her life in Boone Co. and her demise will be mourned by many friends. A husband Albert, seven children, Alfred, Walter, Mantford, Maggie, Addie, Edith, and Zoe, a mother, two sisters, and one brother survive her. The sympathy of all is given the bereaved relatives.
