Cleone E. Floy
Funeral Rites Tuesday for Cleone E. Floy
Funeral Services for Cleone Floy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Floy, were held at the English Lutheran church
Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. F. J. Landdeck, of Rockwell, in charge. The church was filled to overflowing with
relatives and friends of the departed, and a loud speaker was placed in the church basement, which was also filled,
and many were unable to gain entrance into the church.
Cleone Elizabeth Floy was born at Thornton on July 11, 1927. In early infancy she became a child of God through
baptism on August 6, 1927, and on July 7th of this year publicly confessed her faith as she was confirmed in the
Lutheran Faith.
Cleone had completed her education through the eighth grade and this year had begun her high school training, in
spite of the illness which handicapped her. Yet, this year was not to be completed.
On Sunday evening, while attending the Luther League meeting at which the heavenly goal of the christian was discussed,
she was suddenly called by her Lord, and peacefully her soul went forth to rest in His keeping.
Remaining to mourn the sudden departure of this loved one are a devoted mother and father; two sisters, Irene and
Ruth Ann; four brothers, Merlin, Vernon, Dale and Lee; and a host of other relatives and friends. One brother,
Raymond, had already preceded his sister in death.
Out of Christian love, our deepest sympathy is extended to this bereaved family. May our departed loved one rest
in peace, and the Eternal Light shine upon her.
Card of Thanks
We wish to express our sincere thanks to everyone for their kindness, expressions of sympathy and floral offerings
in our recent bereavement. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Floy and Family

Dale R. Floy
Funeral services for Dale Floy, who was killed in an auto accident near Swaledale last Wednesday night, December
5, were held on Sunday December 9, from St. Paul's American Lutheran church followed by internment at the Pleasant
View cemetery with Rev. W. Fritschel officiating.
The members of the Thornton American Legion and ex-service men participated at the services. The ensemble formed
a guard of honor at church and at the grave. A firing squad gave a salute, and taps were sounded at the cemetery.
The casket was draped with the American flag which later was presented to Mrs. Carl Floy to be given to the wife
of the deceased.
Dale Raymond Floy, the son of Carl and Etta Floy was born near Thornton, July 16, 1923. He became a member of St.
Paul's American Lutheran church at Thornton, having been baptized as an infant and later, after instruction in
the truths of the Bible confirmed.
After he had graduated from Thornton high school in the class of 1940, he worked in this community until he enlisted
in the U. S. Naval Reserve in November, 1942. He entered the service in April, 1943, and received his commission
as ensign November 7, 1944, at Pensacola, Florida. He left this country for the Pacific area last July, but returned
a little over a month ago to be placed on an inactive status.
While at Pensacola he was married to Ensign Iona Mae Ytzen on December 28, 1944. It was only a short time that
they had been able to live together, because of his overseas duty. Mrs. Floy was herself injured in the accident,
as they were traveling home to their apartment in Mason City from Swaledale, and is at present at St. Mary'' hospital
at Mason City receiving treatment for her injuries.
The community mourns the tragic death of this young man of ability and promise, the country one of its able defenders,
and the congregation one of its active members.
Those mourning his untimely death, in addition to his parents and his wife, are his three brothers, Vernon, who
was discharged from the service only a few days ago, Merlin, and Lee, who is still serving in the Pacific area;
his 3 sisters, Irene of Clear Lake, and Ruth Ann as well as a large number of relatives, and a host of friends.

churches which she had attended. During her college years she had also been active in the Lutheran Students' association.
She died suddenly on the morning of December 12 while she was on her way to school. It was the second death in
the family within a week, since her brother, Dale, who had recently returned from the Pacific area, had been killed

at the home of her parents, presently located on a farm northwest of Thornton. It was a great shock to the family,
friends and community when her sudden and unexpected death was reported. In an unforeseen manner divine providence
decreed that she should suddenly meet death as the result of an auto accident. Her youthful life with all its
hopes and promises was brought swift to its close on Saturday evening, October 4. She was removed from the scene

Edward Hartwig
Funeral services for Edward Hartwig were held last Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the home, and at 2 o'clock
at the St. Paul's American Lutheran church. The church was filled to overflowing with sorrowing relatives and
friends. Rev. W. Fritschel officiated. Burial was at the Meservey cemetery. Pall bearers were members of the

moved with his parents to their new home on a farm southwest of Thornton and he had remained a resident of this
community to the time of his death.
In 1911, he was married to Leona Hafermann. Their married life was a happy one and was blessed with two children,
Glen and Ruth. He was devoted to his family, and the early death of his son in 1943 was a heavy blow to him. Mr.
Hartwig had been baptized in early infancy in the Evangelical church located near the home of his parents, and
remained a faithful member of it until it was closed.
In 1930 he was received into membership of St. Paul American Lutheran church by the act of confirmation. He was
a faithful member. It was very seldom that he was absent from any service. He was a regular attendant at the
Adult Bible class after it was organized a few years ago. He was repeatedly elected to office in the congregation
and was serving as deacon at the time of his death.
In 1940 he had taken up his residence in Thornton. His physical condition had for some time made it difficult
for him to do much work. He felt this keenly, but was always ready to render such service, especially to the congregation,
as his condition permitted. His death came rather suddenly on Wednesday af6ternoon, October 8, at 5:20 p.m. after
he had been seized by severe pains on Tuesday noon and taken to the hospital at Mason City where an operation had
failed to relieve his condition.
However, he was granted sufficient time to prepare for his death in a Christian manner, making peace with his fellowmen
and receiving spiritual ministration from Rev. G. Myer of Rockwell. He died in peace, confident of his eternal
salvation. His loss will be keenly felt in the community and within the congregation, about whose welfare he was
so deeply concerned, and especially by the members of his family who survive him: His wife; one daughter, Mrs.
Marvin Miller; the two grandchildren, to whom he was deeply attached; his brothers Neill, George, August and Otto
of Thornton, Louis and Jessie Hampton; and his two sisters, Lena Buck and Mary Buck of Thornton. Two brothers,
Henry and Albert, and one sister, Mrs. Bertha Althen, had preceded him into eternity. [1947
