
Clarke County News Articles~~Railroad News~~ A. B. Garretson Austin B. Garretson, president of the Order of Railway Contractors and one of the best know leaders of organized labor in America, was born in Winterset, Iowa, Sept. 14, 1856, of Quaker parentage. After completing a High School education at Osceola, Iowa, he entered upon a railroad career. In the course of time he became a conductor on a mail railroad in Iowa. Subsequently he entered the service of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas, and later worked for the Mexican National and Mexican Central railroads. In 1889 Mr. Garretson was elected vice-president of the Order of Railway Conductors and since 1906 he has been president of the organization. During the past year he has been much in the public eye because of his efforts to settle the wage dispute between the conductors and the Eastern railroads. [Meriden Morning News, Connecticut, Published September 5, 1913] Submitted by Cathy D. ~~Railroad News~~ James Powers In an accident to the mail train from Chicago, on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy road, near Woodburn, Iowa, James Powers, a section fireman, was instantly killed, and about fifty passengers more or less injured.
