Volunteer Enlistment State of Mississippi Town of Vicksburg
I, William W. Rainer born in Braxton Co in the State of Virginia aged twenty three years, and by occupation a Farmer Do Hereby Acknowledge to have volunteered this twenty-third day of January 1864 to serve as a Soldier in the Army of the United States of America, for the period of THREE YEARS unless sooner discharged by proper authority: Do also agree to accept such bounty, pay, rations, and clothing, as are, or may be, established by law for volunteers. And I, William W. Rainer do solemnly swear, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the United States of America, and that I will serve them honestly and faithfully against all their enemies or opposers whomsoever; and that I will observe and obey the orders of the President of the United States, and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to the Rules and Articles of War.

William died 6 June 1876 and was buried as William "Rainer" in Smack Cemetery [Zion Methodist] in Newton, Whiteside, IL where his mother, Rachel [Huffman] "Raner", maternal grandparents and other kin were buried. The Cemetery, located on an old farm and not readily accessible, is old and abandonded and has been vandalized, but his tombstone remains. No CW marker shows in photo of his tombstone.
Marriage license not included in Military file - he married after the war. He died in 1876 but his wife may have remarried or was deceased by that time.no Widow's pension exists. His three children, Ernest B. Oscar, Nathan W. were all farmed out in 1880 to different households. At least some of this line adopted the Raynor spelling of the name:

Wm W. Raner of the County of Whiteside and State of Illinois, who has this day applied to me for License of Marriage, being duly sowrn, deposes and says that he has arrived at the age of twenty-one years; and that Miss Phebe S. Eye, has the written consent of her parents
(a line has been drawn through the words: has arrived at the age of eighteen years) that they, the parties for whom said application is made, are now single and unmarried, and may lawfully contract and be joined in marriage.
