The Grasshopper Pest in Emmet County, Iowa Estherville, July 28, 1874 I received a copy of your valuable paper in which I noticed a request for information regarding the condition of crops and the prospects of a harvest. In Emmet county, Iowa, our report must necessarily be brief. We will harvest about one eighth of a crop of corn and a very few potatoes. Wheat and oats are almost an entire failure. Cause of disaster—grasshoppers. I put in 140 acres of small grain and corn last spring; have about eight acres of corn left; the balance all destroyed. Very truly yours, S. E.
