At Brush Creek, Fayette county, Iowa, June 17, Elizabeth R., wife of Jabez S. Manchester and youngest daughter of Mrs. William Rowe of Whitefield.

Ada Mae (nee Annett) Johnston

Ada M. Johnston, daughter of Laura and Harvey Annett, was born June 6, 1894 in New Hampton, Iowa. The early years of her life were spent in New Hampton. On Feb. 12, 1913 she was married to George W. Johnston at New Hampton. Oelwein has been their home for the past 30 years. She was a member of the Methodist Church and Ladies Aid Society.

She died at Mercy Hospital June 29, 1948 and is survived by her husband, George W.; two sons, Glenn and Lee of Oelwein; two daughters, Mrs. Peter (Alice) Schulmeister of Oelwein and Mrs. Duane (Velma) Morey of Hazleton; two grandsons, DuWayne Johnston and Larry Morey; four granddaughters, Sandra Kaye Johnston, Joan, Janice, and Joyce Schulmeister; one brother, Ralph Annett of Waterloo; three sisters, Mrs. Clara Craft of Marshfield, Wis., Mrs. Jennie Ross of Waterloo, and Mrs. Nellie Burco of Oelwein.

Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church Thursday, July 1, with the Rev. J. W. Marlin officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Clarence Alonzo Johnston

Services pending for WWI veteran

Funeral services are pending for Clarence Johnston, 81, who has been living at the Veteran’s Hospital in Marshalltown and was a former bridge repairman for the Chicago & North Western Transportation Co. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Brant-Kerns Funeral Home in Oelwein after 2 PM Sunday.

He is survived by nieces and nephews. He was a veteran of World War I.

George William Johnston

George W. Johnston was born June 28, 1890, near Sacramento, Calif. The early years of his life were spent on a farm near Sacramento. At the age of 16, he moved with his family to a farm near New Hampton. On Feb. 12, 1913, he was married to Ada M. Annett at New Hampton. They had four children. In November 1918, Johnston moved his family to Oelwein, where he lived for 46 years. His wife Ada died on June 29, 1948. He married Cora A. Knapp on Oct. 14, 1949.

Johnston was a member of Grace Methodist Church and died at Mercy Hospital, Oelwein, Nov. 16, 1964, after a week of critical illness. He is survived by his wife Cora; two sons, Glenn and Lee, both of Oelwein; two daughters, Alice (Mrs. Peter Schulmeister) of Oelwein and Velma (Mrs. Duane Morey) of Hazelton. There are three grandsons, DuWayne Johnston, Larry and Jerry Morey; seven granddaughters, Sandra Kaye Johnston, JoAnn Schulmeister Dyer, Janice Schulmeister Shepherd, Joyce Jannette and Julie Schulmeister; Darilyn Morey and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Clarence of Oelwein and two sisters, Mrs. Hannah Prahser of Stockton, Calif., and Mrs. Walter Schultz of New Hampton. He was preceded in death by a brother, Guy.

Memorial services were conducted by the Rev. E. Morris Egeland at the Brant Funeral Chapel Nov. 19, 1964, with Mrs. Sam Smith as organist and Russell Brant as Soloist. Casket bearers were Clarence Struckman, Lyle Sisco, John Clemens, Albert Sperry, W. E. Schoephoerster, and James Hoffman. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Peter John Schulmeister

Peter John Schulmeister of 235 Lincoln Drive NE, Oelwein, died Wednesday at his home. Schulmeister, 67, was a retired switchman with the Chicago & North Western Transportation Co. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 AM at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oelwein, with the Rev. Richard Kuhn officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Brant-Kerns Funeral Home, Oelwein, after 7 PM Thursday, where there will be a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 PM Friday and a scripture service at 8 PM Friday.

Surviving are his wife, Alice, Oelwein; five daughters, Mrs. Robert (JoAnne) White of Waterloo, Mrs. Richard (Janice) Shepherd of Oelwein, Mrs. Jamie (Joyce) Bruce of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Larry (Jeannette) Simpson of Oelwein, Mrs. Wayne (Julie) Johnson of Cedar Rapids; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Joseph Schulmeister, John Schulmeister and George Schulmeister, all of Oelwein, and four sisters, Mrs. Lanes (Annie) VandeVerde of Stanley, Mrs. Donald (Mary) Mourer of Waterloo, Mrs. Warren (Marjorie) Inman of Tripoli, and Mrs. Florian (Katherine) Koch of Oelwein. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Barbara, and one brother, Jacob.
