Jasper County, Iowa Town of KelloggKellogg Had Three Names At One Time This town was laid out by Enos Blair and Dr. A. W. Adair on September 12, 1865, a few months before the Mississippi and Missouri railway was completed to this point. These men had thought to locate the town a further east, but when the railway company named the point Kellogg and designated it as a station on the line, these men laid out a small plat and had it recorded as Jasper City. Soon after a postoffice was established on which was bestowed the name of Kimball. So the town for a time had three names. Finally the name of Kellogg was chosen, being the name of an early settler of the community, Judge Kellogg. The first stores in Kellogg were started in 1867 by Blair, Adair and A. Collins. Samuel Rich, who was postmaster at that time, started a blacksmith shop. The first birth in the town was probably in the family of Wm. Vaughn, in the year 1866. The first marriage recorded was that of Wm. Patten and Mollie Winters sometime in 1867. In 1867 the people joined together and erected a church building. It was rented by the school district in 1868 and a school was taught by J. H. Balderson. Kellogg was incorporated in 1873. For a number of years incorporated towns had six councilmen but later the state legislature changed it so now towns have five councilmen to manage the affairs of the town and receive the criticism of the people. Each councilman receives one dollar per meeting and are allowed twelve meetings a year. Kellogg Enterprise, Kellogg, Iowa, Published August 22, 1930 Submitted by Cathy Danielson
