Thursday, 23 August, 1917 Mrs. Susan Lungren came from Newton Friday for a visit with her sister, Mrs Rebecca Miller. These two feeble old ladies are the only children living of the pioneer family of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kintz, the first settlers in Clear Creek township. They came from Cumberland County, Pennsylvania in 1845 and entered 1,000 acres of land. Mrs. Miller now lives with her son, Perry Miller, who now owns and lives on part of the old homestead near Kintz cemetery and church. [Submitted by gmaszoo at iowatelecom.net]
Hares & Smith Shot Two and Blew His Own Brains Out Newton, Iowa, Feb. 18 – Charles Hares shot R. T. Smith, a jeweler, and his wife, at noon yesterday, and then blew out his own brains. Smith is still alive, but cannot live. No cause for the deed is yet known. [The Langston City Herald, Langston City, O. T., Published February 22, 1896]

"OFF FOR THE PEAK - THE FIRST DEPARTURE" 15 March 1860, JASPER FREE PRESS:
As we go to press today, the first train for the new gold miners is starting from our place. There are 19 in the company, with good teams, strong wagons andexcellent outfits. The first train is composed as follows: G. W. Chambers, Abijah Alloway, John Q. Adams and Samuel Hays, one wagon and 4 yoke of cattle. L. E. Webster, lady and child, D. Harper, one wagon and 3 yoke of cattle. P. M. Housel and lady and 2 children, Rev. J. Steele, D. N. M'Cord, Wm. Hawk, James H. M'Cord, Charley Gilman, Nathan Elliott, two wagons and 5 yoke of cattle. If strong arms and willing hearts will accomplish the result, this company will be successful. The best wishes of our citizens go with them.Another train will leave here in a few days."
