1935 In Review-from the News-World Files
History for 1935 is nearly finished. In a few days 1936 will get under way. To refresh memories, the News-World, as last year, publishes the highlights of Wesley news as taken from its files for the past 12 months.

Records reveal 36 births during the year, including twins born to Mr. and Mrs. Herman Ostercamp.

Twenty couples have been married since January 1, 1935. They include in order:

There was one 51st wedding anniversary, that of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Goetz, and three golden anniversaries: the G. G. Studers, the Robert Welters and the George Benners. Other wedding anniversary observances were the:

Three Wesley citizens, are now in California, passed above the 90th milestone. They were: Grandma Seaburg, 93 W. P. Giddings and Mrs. Thos. Turgeson, 91. Nathan Studer reached 84 a week or so ago.

Two fires occurred in town; one in April at the J. H. Lloyd house, and in October the L. P. Olson garage was destroyed.

Honors came to a number of people here. The John Amesbury and H. J. Braley residences were named winners of the Christmas lighting contest. Mrs. I. A. Gerdes was appointed permanent postmaster. W. J. Frimml was made chairman of the Kossuth county corn-hog committee. A. L. Dawson was elected president of the Wesley chapter of the county conservation league. Arlene Haynes and Louise Kunz won the Fidac essay prizes. Clare McCall was placed on the all-sectional basketball tournament team by the Garner Herald. Evelyn Erikson and Paul Garman played with the enmassed orchestra before the North Iowa teachers at Mason City. Carl Johnson was relected town marshal, with a $10 a month increase in salary. Mrs. L. L. Lease was elected to the cemetery board to succeed Mrs. W. W. Sturdivant. Mrs. John Hutchison was selected as delegate to the state Catholic Daughters of America convention at Sioux City. Mrs. R. B. Hopkins gave class oration to Tabor high school graduates.

Joseph Skow was delegate to International Christian Endeavor convention at Philadelphia, later elected district president. K. R. Rowley made Clay county superintendent of schools. Mrs. John Hutchison appointed county old-age pension investigator. Grace Looft appointed to A. I. B. faculty. Karl Wester transferred to Keosauqua. Ben Studer's livestock wins at four county fairs. Elaine Studer has exhibit at state fair. J. A. Hauptmann wins at Fort Dodge air show. Anna Wester appointed dietician of Newark, N. J., hospital. Tom Forburger elected local Legion commander. L. L. Lease finance officer for 14th time, thought to be a state record. Frances Kunz appointed federal office stenographer at Omaha. Anna Siemer won radio recipe contest. L. H. Kleinpeter elected vice-president of county young Democrats. Linus Eisenbacher was master of ceremonies at the ordination of the Rev. Vincent Smith at Chicago. Jurgen Skow elected County Farm Bureau president, Mrs. L. L. Lease selected as district page to state auxiliary convention at Waterloo. Mr. and Mrs. Vee Mullin elected secretary-treasurers of county rural mail carriers and its auxiliary respectively. Eldon Ravlin was appointed superintendent of the Wesley public schools. The Rev. Arthur Bottom was make local Methodist pastor. Vera Kouba was transferred to the Omaha Home Loan Office. Misses Margaret McConnell and Esther Beck were re-elected to the public school facility.

Records: 555 carloads of grain and livestock were shipped from Wesley in 1934. The K. and H. Oil Co. handled more than 700,000 gallons of gasoline in 1935. The Farmers' Co-Operative Society handled 14,000 bushels of corn in one day, April 22.

Meetings: Hardware men from three counties met here. 400 attended the annual meeting of the K. and H. stockholders. The Methodist church held its 50th anniversary observance. The Doan church its 20th. H. S. Alumni have fourth annual picnic.

Improvements: Town bought Brewster estate property and transformed it into a town park. Ed Loebig and donated labor cleaned the vacant lots between the bank and Kraus store. New route for highway 18 completed. K. and H. Oil Co. trebles gasoline storage capacity by three new tanks here.

Business changes: The Farmers' Co-Operative Society bought the Smith Lumberyard. Roy Taylor purchased Lloyd Billiard Parlor. Frank Kouba, Sr. bought west-end Standard station. New businesses: P. C. Haynes' Phillips 66 station, Del's Standard Station, Alice's Variety Shop, Wesley Beauty Shoppe and Plummer Blacksmith Shop.

New comers include: Leo Waldschmidts, Sam Alnes, the Rev. Arthur Bottoms, E. D. Ravlins and Clarence Millers.

General: Council granted 20 percent cut in water rent if paid before April 1. Damage amounting to $150 was caused by explosion of a compressed air tank at the Wesley Auto Co. garage. James and John Lloyd, cousins, were killed in an auto accident south of here. The Eppo Gremmer family were held captives by three bandits who earlier in the day had killed James Zrostlik of Britt.

Real estate transfers: George Aldrich bought the late Henry Kunz house. Joe Miller bought the Roy Taylor farm. Harry Mathaha purchased Schutter house. Guy M. Butts bought Sturdivant property. Ed. Loebig bought Turgeson house. Wallace Benton bought Brewster estate house. Louis Goetz purchased Cink farm.
