Mr. and Mrs. John Richter Celebrate
25th Wedding Anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. John Richter celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary Friday, September 14, not in the usual
quiet manner they had planned, but in a real festive celebration as relatives and friends wanted it to be, The
Richter's all attended mass held in their honor at the St. Joseph's Catholic church at eight o'clock and upon going
home intended to observe the day as any other. The children of the family assisted by Mrs. John Hildmann and Mrs.
Frank Klessel, of Garner, sisters of Mr. Richer, and Mrs. Henry Haverly, a friend and neighbor, had invited in
a group of other relatives and friends, who so stealthily drove to the Richter home and completely surprised the
couple. Each of the families brought food for dinner and supper and guests numbering sixty remained for the day.
Flower bouquets were brought in abundance and joyously placed about the house.
A bridal party table was set at which were honored the bride and groom of twenty five years ago and seated with
them were their two Bridesmaids, Mrs. Frank Eisenbarth (Celestine Rahm) and Mrs. Henry Eischeid (Agnes Garman)
and bestmen, George Ferstl and Rudolph Blenert. Following the bounteous meal the couple were presented with a
gift of money, twnetyfive silver dollars, which had cleverly been concealed at the bottom of a two part flower
vase. They received other gifts also including a beautiful set of chinaware, pieces of silverware, flowers and
other gifts.
The afternoon was very enjoyable spent in visiting and taking pictures, and following the evening meal and darkness,
another group met at the home and gave the party a "Shrieking howling Charivari". Mr. and Mrs. Richter
very generously took the guests of the day and the members of the charivari gang to the lodge hall where an impromptu
dance was held and everybody had a most happy time. Treats including ice cream and cake were given to the guests
during the evening.
Mr. and Mrs. Richter were married at the St. Benedict church September 14, 1909, by the Rev. Anthony Erdman, and
since the day following have made their home on the one farm they are now occupying. They are the parents of nine
fine children, namely, Marie, a registered nurse at Algona, Jack at home, Therese, student nurse at Mason City,
Urban, out of high school. Ann, Ruth, Edward and Francis, all at home and still in school.
There are always funny things which happen at surprise parties of this nature, and this one will have to be told
on Mr. Richter. When he found the merrymakers had come to stay the day decided to change his every day clothes
to his "Sunday go to meetin'" ones. And lo and behold it did not register in his excitement, until nearing
the midnight hour, that he was wearing his old, dirty, mud-bespattered shoes. Nothing could be done about it at
that hour and place, so he danced merrily on, with his friends liking him just as much for all of that, and all
wishing that Mr. and Mrs. Richter might both be well and happy in coming years to enjoy their diamond wedding celebration.
Those from a distance who attended the silver wedding anniversary celebration of Mr. and Mrs. Richter included
the Frank Klesel family of Garner, Loretta Cortney of Thornton, and Frank Eisenbarth family of St. Benedict, Henry
Eischeid and wife of Algona, Fred Young and sons Rudolph, Joe and Verner and their families and Frank Youngs of
Garner, George Ferstl if St. Benedict, Rudolph Binert of Forest City, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Weber, Martha and
Otto of Springfield, Minnesota. The Webers drove in after the party had assembled to visit at the Richter home
and did not know of the surprise, but were made as welcome as the rest and remained until Monday morning. [Kossuth County News 1934, submitted by a Friend of Genealogy]

the twenty relatives did ample justice to the chicken, cake, and other goodies. Mr. and Mrs. Lorenz came to Wesley
about ten years ago, and have operated a service station ever since. At first Mr. Lorenz managed a garage, later
disposing of same to Mr. Lander. The Lorenzes have five children. Mary, the oldest, graduated in 1933, and Joseph
