Rachael Ruth (Davis) Allen Ruth Allen, 62, Dies in Colorado, Rites in Russell Funeral services were held from the Woodman Funeral Home in Russell Saturday for Mrs. Raymond Carl (Ruth) Allen, who died last Wednesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harold Cartwright, in Boulder, Colo. Mrs. Allen will be remembered by a great many Corydon families. She and her late husband Ray and their family lived in Corydon for about 10 years. Mrs. Allen was district manager of the Iowa Southern Utilities in Corydon and from here the family moved to Leon. For the past three years Mrs. Allen has made her home in Colorado. She is survived by three daughters, Roberta Carlson and Irma Cartwright of Boulder, Pauline Gibson of Columbia, Mo., and her son Joe lives in Topeka, Kansas. Ida Yocum Atwell Ida Yocum Atwell, daughter of James F. and Elzan Rissler Yocum was born near Bloomington, Nebraska on October 13, 1878 and departed this life at the Yocom Hospital in Chariton on October 8, 1959 at the age of 82 years, 11 months and 25 days. She was the second child of a family of ten children. On May 1, 1895 she was united in marriage to Ernest A. Atwell at the home of her parents near Confidence. To this union three children, James, Glen and Herman were born. At the age of 14 she united with the Christian Church at Confidence and had been a member 66 years. At the time of her death she was a member of the Christian Church in Chariton. Preceding her in death were her parents, a son James in 1951; three brothers, George, William and Edward; three sisters, Rosalie Yocum, Cora Kern and Minnie Barker. She is survived by her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Mike Colver of Chariton and a son Herman of Des Moines; five grandchildren, Bonnie Hemsworth of Chicago, Ill., LaVerne Gardner of Chariton, Joann Simcoke and Richard Atwell of Des Moines and Alan Atwell of Waverly, Iowa; nine great grandchildren; three sisters and a brother, Mrs. L. L. Thatcher of Corydon, Mrs. Ethel Yocum and Fred Yocum of New London, several nieces and nephews and many friends. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, October 11 at the Miley Funeral Home in Chariton conducted by Rev. Hile of Osceola. Burial was in the Chariton Cemetery. William J. Black Iowa Soldier Dies. Camp Cuba Libre, Jacksonville, Fla., July 20.William J. Black, quarter-master sergeant of Company H, Fiftieth Iowa Volunteers is dead. Ada Carney Departed this life June 12th, 1882, Ada, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Carney of Lucas county, Iowa, in the 18th year of her age. She was a great favorite of the family and beloved by all who knew her. [Henry News Republican, July 6, 1882, submitted by Nancy Piper]
Carey Butler Davis Rites Thurs. for Carey Davis, 91 Carey Davis, 91, of Derby, Iowa, passed away Tuesday a.m. December 29, 1959 at the home of his son James, in Allerton, Iowa. Carey B. Davis was born June 12, 1868 in Shelby County, Ill. Survivors include his wife, Effie, a son James, and granddaughter Joan Davis, of Allerton. Funeral services will be held thursday, Dec. 31 at 2:00 p.m. at the Methodist Church in Derby, by the Rev. P. H. Blunt. Burial will be in the Derby Cemetery. Fayette Proctor Dungan Fayette Proctor Dunoan, only son of Lieut. Governor Dungan, died Sept. 9th in Chicago, at the early age of 35. He was born in Chariton and grew to manhood there, learning the printing business in the newspaper offices of that town. When G. H. Ragsdale of The Chariton Patriot, was elected State Printer, Fayette, who was employed in his office, came to Des Moines and took a responsible place in the new establishment. Some time later he went to Omaha and was for several years employed on The Bee. A few years ago he accepted a position on The Chicago Journal, having charge of the advertising department. He proved to be a most valuable man and was doing excellent service and winning a high place in that branch of newspaper work, when he was stricken down by the fatal malady which terminated his life. Henry Ivan Ford H. Ivan Ford, son of Dennis and Sarah Lodge Ford, was born October 18, 1915 in Russell, Iowa. He was a graduate of Russell High School and attended Simpson College. Ivan was united in marriage to Kathleen Scott on August 6, 1935. Three children were born to this union, Marilyn, Judy and Gary. Ivan and Kathleen worked at Russell Bank and later were transferred to Chariton. After retiring, they enjoyed spending the winters in Edinburg, Texas. Ivan delighted in gardening, hunting, mowing his yard, and building bluebird houses. He maintained a bluebird trail of 80 houses in Lucas County. He served the community in many ways as a volunteer fireman, school board member, and on the town council. He was a member of the Russell Sportsmen's, Lion's Club, Russell Commercial Club, and a faithful member of the United Methodist Church. Ivan passed away May 2, 2010 and was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen in 1988, daughter, Marilyn Palmer, and sisters, Carmen Ford and Phyllis DeBok. He is survived by sister, Josephine Reed, daughter, Judy Chapman (Dean), son, Gary Ford (Norma), son-in-law, Cecil Palmer, and grandchildren, Melissa Robb, Dennis Palmer, Debra Palmer, Teresa Ernst, Toni Reynolds, Todd Chapman, Suzanne Ford, Cindy Franzen, Sara Albert, and eighteen great-grandchildren. Services were held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, May 6, 2010, at Fielding Funeral Home. Interment is in the Russell Cemetery. Officiating was Pastor Raymond Doser. Pallbearers were Dan Reynolds, Drew Reynolds, Lyle Ernst, Todd Chapman, Cecil Palmer and Mike Albert. Memorial contributions may be made to the Russell Methodist Church. Frank Huntley Death of Frank Huntley Special dispatch to the World Herald. Wahoo, Neb., Oct. 26. - This morning at about 4 o'clock at the home of L. O. Shirk in this city occurred the death of Frank Huntley. Mr. Huntley is a cousin of Mrs. Shirk and was paying the family a visit, his home being in Chariton, Ia., from which place he had traveled on his wheel, arriving here last Wednesday evening. Peritonitis was the cause of death. The deceased had been sick but a short time, being in good health when he arrived at this place last Wednesday. He was 22 years of age and was the son of Captain Lyman Huntley, a member of the Iowa legislature. The remains will be taken to Chariton for burial. David C. Johnson David C. Johnson, [son of Andrew Gustav and Charlota Gustava (Brown) Johnson] was born in Derby, Iowa, August 3, 1881 and passed away at his home in Derby, April 15, 1955. Born next door to where he lived he had been a life long resident of Derby. As a young man he was in the stock business and was an auctioneer for fifty years. He auctioned at the Chariton, Russell and Humeston sale barns. Then for the past five years, with his son, owned and operated the Humeston Sale Barn until he retired on account of ill health. When a young man he was taken into the Presbyterian Church and was always faithful to that faith. On January 6, 1909 [in Lucas County, Iowa], he was united in marriage to Elvessa Newsome and five children came to bless their home, a baby son preceding him in death, three daughters, Marjorie Jane Sharp, Gusta J. Flack and Emily Ruth Lazear all of derby, and one son David A. Johnson of Humeston. During his illness he has been cared for by his wife and family in his home. His love for his home and family was unsurpassed. He leaves his devoted wife, children and four grandchildren which he idealized, and a host of loyal relatives and friends. Services were held at the Beardsley Funeral Home in Chariton, on Tuesday, April 18th at 2 p.m. in charge of his beloved friend Rev. J. W. Pressley of Omaha, Nebraska and his great nephew, Robert J. Elsie L. (Gibbs) Lowe Elsie L. Gibbs, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Gibbs was born on a farm west of Derby, Iowa on July 27, 1875 and passed to her eternal rest on December 20, 1959 at the age of 84 years, 4 months and 23 days. On Jan. 16, 1895 [in Lucas County, Iowa] she was united in marriage to William H. Lowe. Providence left them childless. She continued to live in Lucas County until the death of her husband on January 13, 1923. Then she moved to Humeston and resided there until she fell and broke her hip exactly three years before her death at the Gardner Nursing Home in Chariton, Iowa. For some time after taking up residence in the nursing home, she remained happy and cheerful, enjoying joking with relatives and friends who came to visit her, but for the last few months she seemed to lose all interest in life and failed to enjoy her visitors as she once had. So on December 20 she simply closed her eyes and was asleep. She leaves to mourn her passing a brother, Frank Gibbs and a sister, Mrs. Grace Richman, both of Humeston; seven nephews, Ivan and Howard Gibbs, both of Humeston; Cecil of Phoenix, Arizona; Edwin Richman of Moorland, Iowa; Raymond Richman of Russell, Iowa; Eldon and Allen Richman, both of Humeston; two nieces, Mrs. Lela Winedsor and Mrs. Mildred Andersen of Des Moines. Besides these, other relatives and many, many friends. While living in Lucas County she was united with the Last Chance Christian Church but on moving to Humeston she transferred her membership to the Humeston Christian Church of which she was a faithful and willing worker as long as her health would permit. Elsie was also an active member of the local Rebekah and Royal Neighbor lodges always willing and anxious to do her best both in her church and lodges. Pallbearers were: Eldon Jones, Kenneth Surbaugh, Dana Alexander, Dewey Smith and Rex Williams. Leota Jones, Peggy Gardner and Evelyn Eaton were in charge of the flowers. Funeral services were held in the Humeston Christian Church by the Rev. Ronald L. Frazier. Music was by Imogene Kinnear and Patricia Coffey accompanied by Mrs. Herman Joy. Flora Ann (Pollard) Morris Flora Ann Pollard, 11th child of Hezekiah Pollard and Olive Pollard, was born near Last Chance, Union Township, on March 24, 1866 and departed this life on June 18 [1954] at the age of 88 years, 2 months and 24 days, at the home of her daughter, Harry Calhoun, after an illness of twelve weeks. She was married to Robert E. Morris on April 4, 1886, at her parent's home near Last Chance. To this union six children were born, Otis W., Lloyd H. , Olive May, Lena Roberta, Howard and Florence Elizabeth. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, her husband, R. E. Morris, and by one son, Howard, who died in infancy, and one daughter, Mrs. Florence Parkin. Surviving are Otis W. of Derby, Lloyd H. of Des Moines, Mrs. Harry Calhoun, Chariton; Mrs. Ralph Jones, New Virginia; and one sister, Mrs. Ida M. Dennis of Des Moines; also 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Soon after her marriage she became a member of the Derby Methodist Church. She was a faithful and loyal member of to her church and Sunday School as long as her health permitted. She held a life membership in the Women's Foreign Missionary society. Mother Morris will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She has lived a long and helpful life. Funeral services were held at the Derby Methodist Church at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 20, with the Rev. J. E. Clark and the Rev. J. E. McClellan officiating. Burial was in the Derby Cemetery with the Beardsley Funeral Home in charge. George Carlton Murray George Carlton Murray was born June 8, 1942 in Iowa City and departed this life August 23, 1958 at 7:30 p.m. at Skiff Hospital in Newton, Iowa. His first two years were spent in Pawtucket, R.I., where his father was stationed while serving in the navy during World War II. In 1944 he returned to Iowa with his mother and older sister, living at Russell to await his father's discharge from the Navy. He started his schooling in Chariton, later transferring to rural schools, then to Promise City School while living on a farm near Confidence. In 1954 he moved with his family to Newton, where he attended school and would have been a junior this fall. He was a chapter farmer in the Newton F.F.A. organization. Quiet and dependable, he was a willing worker at all times. During the summer he was employed at the Hy-Vee store in Newton. He was liked by all who knew him and will be sadly missed in his home school and community. Surviving are his parents, two brothers, David age 12 and Michael age 11; three sisters, Joyce age 15, Elizabeth age 10 and Virgia age 5; his grandmother, Virgia M. Dodd of Madrid; his grandfather, Cleve Murray of Chariton and many other relatives. Funeral services were held at the Beardsley Funeral Home in Chariton at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 26 with the Rev. Archie Beals officiating. Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery. Susan Walthal Peck Pioneer Woman Dead Denver, Dec. 25. - Mrs. Susan Walthal Peck, aged 76, one of Colorado's pioneer women, died here today. W. C. Penick W. C. Penick Is Dead In Chariton, Iowa News was received in this city yesterday of the death of W. C. Penick, successful banker, merchant and philanthropist, of Chariton, Iowa. Mr. Penick was 87 years old, and father of Harry O. Penick, vice president of the Jefferson Distillery and Denatured Alcohol Company, whose plant is located in Gretna, and who resides at 624 Lewerline Street. Mr. Penick is survived by two other sons, W. B. and J. A., both of whom are in business at Chariton. The elder Mr. Penick was a native Kentuckian, who moved to the Iowa city in 1852. He accumulated a fortune by judicious investment and management, and left many charitable bequests. Mr. H. O. Penick is in Iowa to attend the funeral of his aged parent. Dawn Lynn Phillips Services Thursday in Chariton for Dawn Phillips Dawn Lynn Phillips, 16 month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rex Phillips of Chariton died Monday morning at Yocom hospital from injuries received in a fall from a chair Sunday at her home. Her injuries were not believed to be serious until later in the day when she lapsed into unconciousness. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 20 at 2 p.m. at the Miley Funeral Home in Chariton, with burial in the New York Cemetery. Dawn Lynn was the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Martha Elizabeth Miller Pruett Martha Elizabeth Pruett, daughter of Ezra and Julia Miller, was born Jan. 5, 1881. She passed from this life at a nursing home in Corydon, Iowa, June 6, 1956, at the age of 75. In her youth, with her parents, she came from Illinois to Iowa. She was united in marriage, in 1900, to Herman S. Ekleberry, of Derby, Iowa. Mr. Ekleberry passed away in 1911. To this union were born: Louis, Louise and Paul. Louise Ekleberry, now Mrs. Louise Kerr, is the sole survivor of the immediate family. Early in life she united with the Congregational Church. In 1916 she was married to Charles Pruett, who passed away in 1951. There are three sisters: Mrs. Dora Melvin, Mrs. Burd Barrickman and Mrs. Della Barrickman, surviving, and many nieces and nephews. Besides these, she leaves to mourn her home-going, a host of friends. Burial will be in the Derby Cemetery. Funeral Services were held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Randolph Funeral Home with Rev. A. Van Benschoten officiating. Pianist was Mrs. Karl Binau. Soloist was Mrs. Richard Fain. Aileen Edna Vincent Schreck Aileen Edna Vincent, daughter of James Homer Vincent and Ethel May Stearns Vincent, was born July 9, 1923 at Chariton, Ia., and passed away very suddenly Feb. 28, 1959 at Des Moines General Hospital after a short illness. She was 35 years, 7 months and 19 days old. Aileen attended school for eight years at Center School and four years at Chariton where she graduated. After teaching several months in Lucas County, she was married to George Schreck on Feb. 7, 1942. She was a good wife and mother, willing to help in every situation. She was a member of the Millerton Methodist church, and active in the Women's Society of Christian Service. She was also active in local neighborhood activities. Surviving are he husband, George, two sons, James John age three and one-half and Ronald Wilson one and one-half, her father, J. H. Vincent of Chariton, one brother, Dean Vincent of Cameron, Wisc., one sister, Mrs. Dean Arnold of Chariton, six nephews, six nieces and a host of relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ethel May Vincent, in 1933. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 3 at the Methodist Church, Millerton, Ia. Rev. Ruey Lester Scott Ruey Scott of Russell, Ia. died Monday, July 23, 1956 at the Wayne County hospital following a short illness. [Ruey was born Aug. 6, 1893 in Wayne County, Iowa.] He was a lifetime resident of the Milerton neighborhood until January 1 when he and his wife moved to Russell. He is survived by his wife and three children: Gordon of Ankeny, Paul of Minnesota and Mrs. Ivan Ford of Russell. Augusta Margaret Schreck Tuttle Augusta M. Tuttle was born Feb. 4, 1895 and passed away July 11, 1958 at the age of 63 years, 5 months and 7 days. She was united in marriage on Sept. 27, 1916 to Guilford Glenn Tuttle. To this union were born five children: Melvin of Chariton, Ivan of Ames, Margery Dennison of Chariton, Don of Beirut, Lebanon and Charles William who preceded her in death. Left to mourn her passing are her husband, four children, nine grandchildren, one brother, John Schreck and two sisters, Ida Roberts and Mary Burnett. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Anna Schreck; two sisters, Laura Mitchell and May Burg. Augusta was born and spent her entire life on a farm in Lucas County. She was active all her life. She was a kind and loving mother and grandmother and always putting her family's interest first. Her passing will be mourned by all who knew her. Funeral services were conducted by Harry Newman, Sunday, July 13, 1958 at 2:00 at the Beardsley Funeral Home. Interment was in Freedom Cemetery.
