Eighth Traffic Fatality

OSAGE, IA. - Mitchell County recorded its eighth traffic fatality of the year Saturday in the crash of a ports car and a school bus converted to a camper. Kenneth Donald Helfter, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Helfter of rural New Haven, was killed when his car struck the camper, which was stopped and signaling for a left hand turn from Iowa 9 into Pioneer State Park, authorities said. The accident scene was 6 1/2 miles east of Osage. The youth's car was headed south and veered across the highway, officer's said. Robert Halliday, 43, of Duncombe, the camper driver, and a man and woman passenger, escaped injury. Young Helfter's death put Mitchell County one ahead of its previous record of seven traffic fatalities in all of 1958. Besides his parents, he is survived by four brothers and four sisters. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church at New Haven. The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. today at the church.
