News ArticlesDr. Daniel Backer Dr. Daniel Backer, a prominent physician of Whiting, Iowa, was brought before the commissions of insanity Thursday, adjudged insane and sent to the hospital at Cherokee, being the first patient to that institution from Monona county. The town of Belvidere, of Monona county, the first town, and twice the spirited candidate for the county seat, has been succeeded by Turin. [Clinton Mirror, Clinton, Iowa, Published August 26, 1905, submitted by Cathy D.] Ed Brainard Ed Brainard, a farmer living near Preparation, Monona county, was murdered in Harrison county while on the way to Woodbine to buy a farm. He had about $2,000 on his person. [Clinton Mirror, Clinton, Iowa, Published March 15, 1902, submitted by Cathy D.] William Morran Onawa - William Morran, brother of Thomas Morran, confined in the Monona county jail for horse stealing, having just been released from a term at Stillwater, Minn., was held to the grand jury at the hearing charged with attempting to liberate prisoners. [Clinton Mirror, Clinton, Iowa, Published August 26, 1905, submitted by Cathy D.] C. S. Pike Onawa - C. S. Pike, a long time resident of Onawa and a painter by trade was found dead in his bed. Parties for whom he was to do some work, who called at his home, made the discovery. His wife is in the east and he was staying alone. The cause of his death is supposed to have been heart trouble.
