Cora Ellen Adams

Cora Ellen Adams was born at Strawberry Point, Clayton co., Iowa, August 22, 1871. At the age of four years she was left motherless and was then adopted by her grand parents, James H. Stockwell and wife. They lived for a time at Peterson, where her grandmother died. She, with her grandfather, then moved to Sutherland. She was united in marriage to Morace Adams Nov. 5, 1895. Four children came to gladden the home, Beryl Lucile, Gladys Julia, Vernon Clare, and Emma June. All survive her but Vernon Clare, who died five years ago, at the age of four years. Her husband and a step daughter, Mrs. Edmond Langdon, are also left to mourn her death.

Three years ago the family moved to Draper, S. Dak., where they lived until last November, when they returned to the old home at Sutherland.

She was taken into the church and gave her heart to God when a girl of fifteen, and since has lived a true, consistent christian life. After a lingering illness of several months, during which time all was done that loving hands could do, her spirit passed away to the God who gave it, Feb. 8, 1912.

She was a faithful member of the W. R. C., of this place.

Funeral services were held at the M. E. church Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Rev. J. T. Lee conducted the services, assisted by the W. R. C. in their ritual ceremony.

The remains were laid to rest in the Waterman cemetery.

Rest mother, rest
In quiet sleep,
While friends in sorrow
Oe'r thee weep

Howe, pastor of the church, officiated. Mrs. Philip Jordan sang "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross" as part of the service. Mrs. D. J. Briggs accompanied her at the piano. The Masonic burial service was conducted by L. O. Lampman of Primghar.

Interment was in Waterman cemetery. Pallbearers were Walter Sewell, H. H. Hendrick, Leigh Drake, W. E. Hockert, F. J. Davis, and C.W. Tigges.

1865 -Lincoln Adams-1939

Lincoln Adams, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Quincy Adams, was born at Freeport, Illinois July 4, 1865, and died at his home in Sutherland October 5, 1939 at the age of 74 years. For some time he had been in failing health. Two months ago he became seriously ill, gradually growing weaker until Wednesday night when he passed away peacefully in his sleep.

Mr. Adams was a descendant of the early American pioneers, some of his ancestors having lived in New England during colonial days and having fought in the Revolutionary war.

His boy hood was spent in Stevenson county, Illinois where he received his education and assisted his father on the farm.

In 1896 he came to O'Brien county and in 1898 was married to Miss Betty Pickering of Sutherland. The first two years of their married life were spent managing his father's farm in Illinois. In 1901 they returned to Iowa, living for a time on their farm near Sutherland and for the past twenty years in town.

There remain to mourn his loss, his wife, a daughter Bernice (Mrs. Forrest Phillips of Hartley) and a son, Harold, of Sutherland; two grandchildren, Alice Ann and Harlyne Adams; two brothers, Oscar of Sioux City and Will of Byron, Illinois; three sisters, Mrs. Hattie Wolf of Hampton, Mrs. Florence Clerk (sp) of Seattle, Washington, and Mrs. Clara Younger, of Sioux City, also many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Eva and two brothers, Morace and Grant.

A public spirited man, Mr. Adams took much interest in all projects for the betterment of his community, worked whole heartedly for their success. He has held office in the different organizations to whih he belonged and for a number of years was a member of the Sutherland school board. He was a member of Abiff Lodge A. F. & A. M. and of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Early in life he accepted the Christian faith and joined the Evangelical church of Florence Station, Illinois. When he came to Sutherland he transferred his membership to the Methodist church here and has, for almost forty years, been one of its most faithful members. Much of this time he has served on the board of stewards of that organization.

Through all his years he treasured in his heart the teachings of the Master and in his life they bore the fruits of honorable dealing with his fellowmen and of kindliness toward all; traits that enriched the lives of others as well as his own and made him one of the kindest of husbands and fathers and truest of friends.

The world is better because a man like him as lived.

Mr. Adams' death came as the effect of a heart attack, but he had suffered similarly on last New Year's Day and since then had been bedfast most of the time.

Morace Adams was a quiet and unassuming man, widely known in this community through the many friendships he had made since coming here 45 years ago. Much of that time, 35 years, was spent in the employ of lumber yards, his last connection being with the F. M. Slagle Lumber Co., where he was employed until the beginning of his last illness.

His early boyhood was spent at Florence, where he was a member of the Evangelical church. In 1880 he moved to Grundy Center, Iowa, where he engaged in farming. On Oct. 4, 1883, he was married to Minnie Heine of Florence, who passed away May 3, 1887. To this union one daughter, Mabel, was born.

In 1893 he moved to Sutherland and engaged in creamery work for a few years. On Nov. 5, 1895, he was married to Cora E. Stockwell, who preceded him in death Feb. 8, 1912. To this union four children were born: Beryl, Gladys, Erma, and Vernon who died in infancy.

For the last 35 years he was employed in lumber yards here, with the exception of two years that he lived in Draper, S. Dak.

January 1st of this year he suffered a heart attack which was followed by other complications. He seemed to rally for a time, but gradually grew weaker until July 11th, when he suffered another heart attack from which he did not rally. Death came peacefully at 1 o'clock, Monday, July 12th.

He was a kind and loving father and his interest was always centered in his home and family.

Dak.; Gladys Triplett of Bruno, Minn.; and Erma Olhausen of Sutherland; five grandchildren; three sisters: Hattie Wolfe of Hampton, Iowa; Florence Clark of Seattle, Wash.; and Clara Younger of Sioux City; and three brothers: Oscar and Lincoln of Sutherland and Wiliam of Byron, Ill.
