THE OBITUARY OFMary H. Daugherty Abbott |
Mary H. Daughtery Abbott, the wife of Edwin J. Abbott, and the first matron of the Woman's Christian Association Hospital nearly thirty years ago, died at 3:25 o'clock Thursday morning at her home at 509 Damon from Bright's Disease. She was 74 years old.
Mrs. Abbott had been a resident of Council Bluff for thirty six years, and was always known as a leader in charitable work. When the newly organized Woman's Christian Association, which was formed in 1884, late in 1886 started its hospital work in a rented cottage, which has developed into the Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital, Mrs. Daughtery, which was her name then, was placed in charge as the first matron of the new Cottage Home Hospital, as it was called.
She was a native of New York, having been born in that state January 12, 1841. She was married to Mr. Abbott in this city. She is survived by her husband and one daughter, Mrs. C.S. Spencer of this city, by a brother N.L. Root of Manson, IA, and an adopted brother, Owen Root Preston of Rome, NY.
She was active member of Woman's Relief Corps No. 180 and also of Council Bluffs Rebekah Lodge No. 3. She had long been affiliated with the Episcopal Church.

The funeral of the late Mrs. Mary H. Daugherty Abbott, wife of E.J. Abbott, who died Thursday morning will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence at 509 Damon Street.
Rev. F.W. Evans of the First Presbyterian Church will conduct the services. Burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Abbott was a direct descendant of a revolutionary soldier, her grandfather having served in the Seventh Vermont line.
