THE OBITUARY OF

Sarah Jane (Headley) Bunnell

Sarah Jane (Headley) Bunnell

Sarah Jane Headley was born at Terre Haute, Indiana, July 7, 1838, and passed away at her home in Avoca, Sunday morning, September 23, 1928, aged 90 years, two months and 16 days. The family located first in the eastern part of this state but later came to Pottawattamie County. The trip was made overland in a covered wagon, drawn by oxen.

She was united in marriage to Joseph Bunnell in August 1856 and to this union were born eight children. When Mr. Bunnell enlisted in the Civil War, Mrs. Bunnell moved to Newtown where she remained until the close of the war. For many years the family occupied a farm just south of Avoca a few miles. Mrs. Bunnell is one of the earliest pioneer settlers having lived in this section for more than seventy years. Her recollections went back to the days when western Iowa was a vast rolling prairie, upon which roamed the buffalo, deer, elk and other smaller game. The Indians were plentiful and not always to be trusted. While she endured the hardship of the early pioneer, she also saw the country to its present state of luxury and advancement. What she has witnessed in 90 years of life would out rival the story of Aladdin's Cave today.

Mrs. Bunnell is survived by: two daughters, Mrs. Annis Cramer of LeMars, Iowa; and Mrs. Emma Robinson of Julesburg, Colorado, and three sons, Albert Bunnell of Avoca, Charles S. Bunnell of Toledo, Oregon, and Ola E. Bunnell of Monrovia, California; also one sister, Mrs. Ann Pierce of Avoca, a large number of grandchildren and several great grandchildren with whom the community joins in sympathy.

Funeral services were conducted from the Blust Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon, September 26, with Rev. S.J. Tilden Sloan officiating. (Graceland Cemetery at Avoca, Section 10, Row 11, July 7, 1838-September 23, 1928)
