Bert Canon

One man was killed and three others injured Monday when the jeep in which they were riding plunged into a 20 foot deep ravine in a hayfield south of Glenwood.

Bert Canon, 79, died of injuries suffered when he was thrown from the jeep as it flipped into the ravine. Two others passengers, Charles Walter, 58, Omaha, and James Crookham, 74, Des Moines, were flown by air ambulance to St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha. Walter was reported in critical condition at the hospital Tuesday morning. Crookham was listed in fair condition.

The driver of the vehicle, John Crookham, 54, of Council Bluffs, received minor injuries. The accident occurred on the Canon-Crookham family farm.

Canon, a professional photographer, was the former owner of Canon Studies in Council Bluffs. He was born in Milford and had lived in Carson and Griswold before moving to Council Bluffs in 1946.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Marjorie; two daughters, Diana Lea Somers and Ramona Crookham both of Council Bluffs; a brother, Rush of San Diego, CA; one grandson and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at the Cutler Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. A.H. Hoersch, a retired Congregational minister, will officiate. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Washington Township.
