THE OBITUARY OF

Stephen T. Cary

Stephen T. Cary

Died—At his residence in this city, of Typhoid Fever, on Saturday morning, 10th Inst., at 10 o’clock A. M., Stephen T. Cary, in the 36th year of his age.

Mr. Cary was one of the earliest settlers of this place, having came here in 1849. Since that time he has been the first in energy and enterprise in every laudable public good, and has done much towards the settlement, growth, and improvement of our city. When the poor, needy, or afflicted, called for assistance, his hand was ever open for their assistance and relief. He was an estimable citizen, a faithful and diligent public servant, an obliging neighbor, a kind and affectionate husband and father, and a man of intelligence, talent and industry, and a gentleman in his manners and intercourse with others.

In him, the public has lost one of its most valuable citizens, and a good, upright, just and noble-minded man.

The remains were followed to the grave by a large number of his friends, on Sunday at 11 o’clock, although the day was quite an unpleasant one, and when the earth fell heavily upon his final narrow house, the sound sent a shrill of shivers to many of a heart that realized his meritorious worth.

Mr. C. was born in one of the Eastern states and at an early age set his face westward. He leaves behind, a brother, a sister, a disconsolate wife and a young daughter. His remains are to be removed to the side of his parents in Indiana, upon the opening of navigation. We sincerely sympathize with the family and friends in their bereavement.
