The Railroad Companies of Council Bluffs

1880-81 Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad

The CHICAGO, BURLINGTON & QUINCY RAILROAD has been long since formed one of the great railroads centering in Council Bluffs.

Its wealth seems untold, and they are never done reaching out for new fields. It has almost a monopoly of southern Iowa traffic, and its extensions into Missouri and Nebraska enables it to compete for the immense trade of Kansas and Nebraska. It branches out in Illinois in many directions, from the main line. Traversing as it does a beautiful country, wherever it goes, one cannot wonder at the growth of both road and country.

That irrepressible general western ticket agent, D.W. Hitchcock, who has his headquarters at St. Joseph, Missouri, has been a power for many years in that company, attending to the passenger business of the same. We have a growing and competent man among us as the local general agent of the company Mr. W.J. Davenport. It is due to superior work on the part of the agents that the C.B. & Q road has reached so popular a position.

The Nebraska portion of the C.B. & Q line extends from Omaha and Plattsmouth, Nebraska to Lincoln, Kearney and the Republican River valley. It crosses almost every county in the south Platte country, and carries away a great portion of trade and traffic of that country. The bridge recently built at Plattsmouth has long been needed, and it will afford them much convenience.

At Omaha the company has an extensive apartment for their business, and in their land department employ many experienced agents.

There are many thousands of acres of splendid land for sale by this company in Nebraska, and their agents are giving ever inducement any man can wish to buyers.

Direct connection is made from Council Bluffs via Omaha and Plattsmouth with this company, for any point in Southern Nebraska. A.E. Touzalin is assistant general manager for the company in Nebraska. Mr. Lowel is general agent with headquarters at Omaha.
