Railroad Companies of Council Bluffs1880-81 Chicago & Northwestern Railway
The CHICAGO AND NORTHWESTERN RAILWAY is one of the three Chicago roads making Council Bluffs their western terminus. It was the first to reach our city and has been very liberal in accommodating our people. Its lines are each year being extended into new country, and to its enterprise Iowa and Minnesota owe a great debt. They have often built more road than was demanded by the country through which it traveled, but the aim was to build the road through a new country, and induce people to come in and settle, thus making homes for thousands of men who would today be homeless. It is but fair to say that to the Northwestern is due the thanks and good will of multitudes of people in this western country. This line has probably as many miles of road traversing the western country as any other, and progresses as rapidly. Its managers and agents are all efficient and gentlemanly. Their passenger coaches are elegant and superb. Ranging into Wisconsin, Minnesota, Dakota, Illinois and Nebraska, passengers can leave almost any point and ride comfortably. Mr. J.T. Clark represents the company's interests in Council Bluffs as general agent. Mr. McKenzie is local freight and passenger agent.
