Railroad Companies of Council Bluffs

1880-81 Central Pacific Railway

The CENTRAL PACIFIC RAILWAY connects at Ogden with the Union Pacific. Its line extends to San Francisco across Utah, Idaho, Nevada and California. Lateral branches are run in various directions from the main line in Nevada and California, thus reaching every important section of the Pacific slope. The beauty of the Sierra Nevada mountains is readily seen by a ride over this road and its branches, and you must give the poets and prose writers and painters the credit of showing up and picturing to the world the grand scenes to be enjoyed.

The length of this line is 834 miles, making the distance from Council Bluffs to San Francis 1,868 miles.

The Central pacific Company has also in operation 2,000 miles of railroad from San Francisco southward, penetrating into Arizona and New Mexico. It is expected that inside of one year a through route will be opened via the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe from Kansas City to San Francisco in connection with this California and Arizona portion of the Central Pacific, the two roads joining hands at some point in New Mexico.

Four days from Council Bluffs and Omaha via the Union and Central pacific roads, riding in elegant and comfortable Parlor Coaches, and sleeping a sound sleep at night.
