THE OBITUARY OFEverett Melvin Delph |
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, October 16 at the Presbyterian Church in Shelby for Everett Melvin Delph, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Delph, who was killed in action in the Phillippine Islands, May 18, 1945. Interment was in the Shelby Cemetery with the Legionnaires as pallbearers. Everett Melvin Delph was born in Shelby County, June 23, 1926. He attended the Shelby consolidated school and was employed with Dow, Hale and Legrigo, Inc., before entering the service.
He enlisted in the army on his 18th birthday, June 23, 1944, and was called into the service October 18 of the same year. His first assignment was with the 271st Replacement Co. After basic training at Camp Hood, Texas, and Fort Ord, CA, he was sent overseas. He was eventually assigned to Co E 152nd Inf. Reg. 38th Div. While on duty with this unit in the vicinity of Barranka, Rizal Province, Luzon, Phillipine Islands, he was instantly killed by a grenade when he was helping to defend a perimeter during a fierce Japanese counter attack.
He leaves to mourn his passing his mother, a twin sister, Evelyn (Mrs. Glen Foster), three other sisters, Alice, Lois and Mary and one brother, Elmer. Also, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Cunningham. His father, who was a veteran of World war I, died in June 1947.
