THE OBITUARY OFGlen B. Dilts |
Apparently losing control of his plane when his motor cut after a wing maneuver, Glen B. Dilts, 26, well known pilot who operated off of the Council Bluffs Municipal Airport, crashed two miles west of Crescent Saturday and was instantly killed. Dilts, who hangared his plane with J.G. "Red" Coulter at the airport, left the local field Saturday morning and flew to Crescent where his parents make their home.
According to four men who were watching Dilts fly from the makeshift field west of Crescent, he had taken off into the south and had circled the field several times when he attempted a wing over at an altitude of approximately 150 feet and the motor cut out. The plane then went into a steep dive. As it neared the ground just north of the field used for landing purposes it crashed through the fence on the north side of the road and buried its nose on the opposite bank. The plane burst into flames when it crashed and Dilts' body was badly charred. A portion of the wing of the plane struck a car parked near where the plane crashed. Those in the car were Duncan Malvern, Donald Tomanio, Freeman Hough and John Webster all of Crescent. They had motored to the field to watch Dilts fly. Men in the car estimated Dilts had been in the air about seven minutes before he crashed.
Belief that Dilts died of injuries received when the plane crashed was expressed by County Coroner Leonard Jackson and J.G. "Red" Coulter, both of whom viewed the body. The twisted metal framework about the cockpit led the men to this conclusion.
Dilts graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School and attended mechanical school at Lincoln. His interest in aviation dates back ten years, members of his family said. He received his training at the old Council Bluffs airport. He had been flying for more than three years and was known in local aviation circles as a conservative pilot. He was not given to stunting. At the time of the crash he was flying a Travel Air three place biplane which he purchased last spring.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Dilts; four sisters, Mildred Dilts, teacher; Agnes Dilts, Mrs. Everett Ferris, Boomer, and Mrs. Wayne Jones. Mrs. Jones lives at Peterson, Iowa.
The body was removed to Jackson's Mortuary. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:30 at Crescent. Burial will be in the Crescent Cemetery.
