THE OBITUARY OF

John Lockwood Dodge

John Lockwood Dodge

The 90-year-old nephew of the late Gen. Grenville M. Dodge died Sunday at his home near 3501 Sixteenth Avenue. Death was attributed to a heart condition.

John Lockwood Dodge who was "Lockie" to intimates, lived the past three years in a small building known as the "cabin" on the Dodge farm.

Born here on December 10, 1867, he was the son of Nathan P. Dodge, pioneer real estate man.

Dodge was a member of Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders and maintained a ranch at Jackson Hole, Wyoming. His interest in horses resulted in a storage room full of mementoes including carriages, saddles and other items at his home here. This collection was termed his "jewels" by one relative. A graduate of Harvard Law School, Dodge kept a library at his dwelling. "He read a lot," related Mrs. Charles Drake of 3501 Sixteenth Avenue, who provided meals and other assistance to Dodge. Dodge also enjoyed carpentry work according to Mrs. Drake. Trophies earned at Harvard were lined on shelves in his home. The silver cups marked victories in running, sparring and wrestling. Next to Dodge's bed was a large portrait of a young woman. He never married.

Survivors include: sister, Mrs. Edgar H. Scott, Washington, D.C.; three nephews, N. Phil Dodge, Omaha City Councilman, Hunter L. Scott of Fresno, California; and Henry Whitney Dodge of Washington, D.C.; four nieces, Mrs. R.L. Paine of Boston, Massachusetts, Mrs. Margaret Scott Bowers and Mrs. Louise Scott both of Washington D.C. and Mrs. Lloyd Brown, Bangor, Maine.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Forest lawn Cemetery in Omaha. Meyer Funeral Home is in charge.
