John W. Downs


John W. Downs

John W. Downs, 87, member of a pioneer western Iowa family, died Monday evening at his residence at Lake Manawa after a lengthy illness. He was born in 1854 at Downsville, west of the present town of Underwood, and lived all his life in this county. Before retirement he was employed by the Quinn Lumber Company. He is a member of Council Camp No. 14, Woodmen of the World and the Reorganized Latter Day Saints Church.

Surviving are two sons, Jack W. Downs of Council Bluffs, Marion C. Downs of Idaho Falls, Idaho, six daughters, Mrs. C.C. Rogers and Mrs. Paul Brackney of Council Bluffs, Mrs. C.R. Cross of Neola, Mrs. F.M. Fouts of Idaho Falls, Mrs. A.F. Ottman of Hot Springs, SD and Mrs. O.W. South of Huntington Park, CA. There are 15 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Woodring's Chapel with burial in the Downsville Cemetery.
