Downsville Cemetery is located on Juniper Road in Section 29 of Norwalk Township, south of Underwood between Railroad Highway and I-80. Several of the graves are more than 100 years old. Some of the gravestones are embedded in the ground and others are worn smooth by the elements and time. A portion of the Asa Downs farm was set aside for a family cemetery. The first burial in the cemetery is that of Ezekial Downs (father of Asa Downs) who died January 20, 1860 at the age of 60 years.
The State of Iowa acquired right of way through a portion of the land in the 1970s when Interstate 80 was built. In 1975, the state deeded property back to Norwalk Township for use as a cemetery. In 1982, Pottawattamie County acquired a very small portion of the cemetery from the township to use for indigent burials (potters field).
Directions to Downsville Cemetery from Council Bluffs: OR: Go east on Highway 6 East (E. Kanesville Blvd) to Interstate 80, turn left (north) onto the interstate and go to the Underwood Exit (Exit 17), approximately 9 miles. Turn left onto Magnolia Road and go west six tenths of a mile to Railroad Highway/G8L, turn left (South) onto Railroad Highway and drive 2 miles then turn left onto Juniper Road.
