THE OBITUARY OFJoseph Smith Evans |
Joseph Smith Evans, 82, resident of Council Bluffs and Pottawattamie County for the last seventy three years, died friday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ira L. Hathaway, 5 Grace Street, following a four week confinement due to a broken hip sustained in a fall. Mr. Evans was born in Blackwood, Wales, July 4, 1846, and at the age of 9 came with his parents from Liverpool to New York, thence to Iowa City, and thence by hand cart to Council Bluffs. He received his education in Pottawattamie County, and was married on October 26, 1866 to Miss Jane Rees, who was also born in Wales.
Mr. Evans took up farming, having settled on government land in Garner Township in 1873. He was retired at the time of his death. His wife died several years ago. Besides the daughter at whose home he died, two other daughters and a son survive Mr. Evans, Mrs. Candace Watson, Mrs. Roy Hathaway and David Evans all of Council Bluffs.
The body was removed to the Ben B. King funeral home. Services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints on Pierce Street. Elder Charles F. Putnam will have charge of the services. Burial will be in the Evans Cemetery, between here and Crescent.
