Mary P. Franklin, 81, 312 McGee, resident of Council Bluffs since 1865, died last week was buried in Walnut Hill Cemetery on a spot near where she spent her childhood in a log cabin. Coming to Council Bluffs with her parents immediately after arriving in this country from England, the family constructed a log house on a plot of ground that is now included in the Walnut Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Franklin attended school in the first school house ever used in Council Bluffs. She was a classmate of Mrs. Amelia Folsom Young, last wife of Brigham Young, founder of the Mormon colony. The school was held in the Odd Fellows Hall at Pierce Street between Stutsman and Grace Streets.
Although she was a member of the Church of England, Elder J. A. Hansen, Weston, Latter Day Saint pastor and friend of Mrs. Franklin, was in charge of the services. Pallbearers were Jess Graybill, Frank Barlow, John Pilling, Charles Chapman, Hubert Tinley and George Rogers. (no gravestone)
