THE OBITUARY OFRalph L. Guanella |
RALPH L. GUANELLA, one of our well-known and highly respected citizens is dead. He died yesterday afternoon about two o'clock at the family residence on the corner of Pierce and Frank Streets. The event was not entirely unexpected as he had been suffering from consumption for a number of years past, and recently had been much worse than at any time during his illness so that his friends had given up all hopes of his ultimate recover. But, notwithstanding this, they were not expecting to hear of his death so soon, as he has been able to he up and around and even out riding no longer ago than Monday last. At that time he was very weak but seemed to be in tolerable good spirits. From that time he grew rapidly worse till death came as above stated and relieved him of his sufferings.
Ralph L. Guanella was born in the city of New York in 1839 and was consequently in his thirty-ninth year. He came to Council Bluffs in 1860 and engaged in freighting between this city and Denver for a few years. In the spring of 1864 he went to California where he remained until the following year when he returned and engaged in the ice business. This he continued at until the fall of 11874 when he sold out with the intention of arming. Prior to this his health began to fail him and his reason for making the change was the hope that it would prove beneficial in this direction. His hopes, however, were not realized and he made a trip to Colorado and subsequently to Minnesota, but all to no purpose. He was obliged to abandon farming and last year moved back to the city where he has lived ever since.
His life was an active one, and besides his other business he at one time had a meat market which he managed and at another time a grocery store. He was Chief Engineer of the fire department for a number of years and was recognized as a man well fitted for the position. He discharged its duties to the complete satisfaction of the entire department and our citizens generally, until he was compelled to resign by reason of poor health. In 1873 he was married to Miss Mary Lawlor of this city, who with one child survives him. The funeral will take place on Friday next at ten o'clock from the Catholic Church, and will be attended by the entire fire department. Friends of the family will please attend without further notice.
The funeral of the late Ralph L. Guanella took place yesterday forenoon from the Catholic Church and was largely attended by the members of the fire department and friends of the deceased.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Father McMenomy, in an impressive manner, and upon their conclusion the remains were conveyed to the Catholic Cemetery on Walnut Hill for interment, accompanied by a large procession headed by Olker's Band.
