A. Hafman/Hofman

Two deaths at an interval of less than five hours yesterday morning were the result of two railroad yard accidents. Williams Burns, switchman for the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific, was run over and horribly mutiliated at 7:20 a.m., and A. Hafman, colored, a helper at the Wabash round house was likewise run over by an engine at 2:30 a.m. and killed almost instantly.

The accident resulting in the death of A. Hofman occurred at the Wabash round house at 2:30 a.m. He was going over the tender on engine No. 778, to open a switch. Losing his balance he fell and was caught by the wheels and run over. James Matthews was in charge of the engine. He was dead before medical assistance could be secured. The body was taken to Cutler's and steps at once taken to locate his family.

He was 45 years old and his home was at Hannibal, MO. The Wabash authories received word by telegram yesterday afternoon with instruction to hold the body until tomorrow when either one of the family will come here or other arrangements will be made to care for the body.

The funeral of A. Hafman, the colored man who was killed in the Wabash railroad accident sunday morning was held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Cutler parlors. Interment was in the Walnut Hill Cemetery. (no gravestone)
