THE OBITUARY OF

Dorathy Headley

Dorathy Headley

Mrs. DORATHY HEADLEY died at her home in Avoca on Tuesday night, January 20th, 1892, at ten o'clock at the advanced age of 87 years, 3 months and 15 days of pneumonia.

Deceased has been in good health until the past few weeks when her strength appeared to gradually fall, but she was considered quite strong for one who had passed so many mile posts. About a week ago she was stricken with pneumonia, which resulted in her death.

Deceased was born in Green County, Pennsylvania on October 11, 1804 and was united in marriage with Joshua Headley in 1822. She resided in Indiana for a time and then came to Iowa, taking up her residence in Lee County.

In 1851 she took up her home in this county, where she has since resided. She was the mother of twelve children, four of whom died in their infancy. At the breaking out of the war, Jackson and William enlisted, William alone returned, Jackson having given up his life. George died in 1851 and Dorathy Gibbens the youngest daughter died in 1886 (should be 1884).

Five children survive her, namely: Mrs. J.A. Bunnell, Mrs. A. Pierce and Joseph Headley of this place; William resides in Kansas; and James resides in Harrison County, Iowa. She united with the Methodist Church in 1826 and remained a member until her death.

It was expected that Rev. Morrow would conduct the funeral services, but owing to an oversight he was not present and the services were conducted by Rev. Johnson.

The remains were laid to rest in the Avoca Cemetery on Thursday afternoon.
