Dr. A.V. Hennessy

New York city officials Monday were investigating the death of Dr. A.V. Hennessy, prominent Council Bluffs surgeon, who fell or jumped to his death from the sixteenth story of the Hotel New Yorker sunday afternoon, his body striking an extension roof on the fifth story. A report was submitted Monday by Dr. Charles Norris, medical examiner, describing the death as suicide, but authorities were still investigating. The medical examiner's report states that Dr. Hennessy had been in ill health for about three years and had suffered a nervous breakdown several months ago. Dr. and Mrs. Hennessy had been visiting a nephew, Dr. James D. Hennessy, of the staff of the Long Island College Hosspital in Brooklyn, after a long stay on the Pacific coast where Dr. Hennessy had gone in search of health.

The body is expected to arrive in Council Bluffs Wednesday at 7 a.m. over the Milwaukee Railroad. It will be taken to Beem Belford Funeral Home. Dr. Hennessy was born in Iowa City on October 15, 1884. He was graduated from the University of Iowa School of Medicine in 1906. He came to Council Bluffs directly from the university and began the practice of medicine, serving his internship in this city.

Dr. Hennessy was married to Miss Marie Cornelius in 1909. She and two sons, A.V. Hennessy, Jr., and Charles, both at home, survive him. He is also survived by his brother, M.C. Hennessy.

During the world war, Dr. Hennessy was a major in the medical corps of the United States Army and was in command of the government hospital at Scofield Barracks, Honolulu, Hawaii. He also had supervisory power over several of the minor hospsitals in the Hawaiian Islands and spent much of his time on inspection tours in the islands. He was one of the youngest men in the medical corps to hold such a responsible position.

At the time of his death Dr. Hennessy was a member of the Council Bluffs Medical Society, the Iowa State Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He was a past president of the state organization. In addition to his connection with various medical societies, he was a member of the executive board at Mercy Hospital, a position he had held for the last twelve years. He was a former president of the staff of Mercy Hospital and was chief of the surgical staff. He was appointed associate professor of surgery at Creighton University Medical School in 1931 and held the post at his head.

He was a member of St. Francis Xavier's parish. Dr. M.C. Hennessy and C.R. Cornelius, father of Mrs. A.V. Hennessy, left Monday for Chicago, where they were to meet Mrs. Hennessy and the body of her husband to return them to this city.

Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Beem Belford Mortuary is in charge. (Sec. C, Row 11, Oct. 15, 1884-January 15, 1933)
