THE OBITUARY OFElizabeth (Ross) Hutchinson |
Elizabeth Hutchinson, 83, died Sunday morning of paralysis at her home 303 Harrison Street. Elizabeth Ross was born in Yorkshire, England, July 2, 1838. At the age of 5, with her mother she crossed the Atlantic in a sailing vessel, taking seven weeks to make the trip. Her father preceded them a year or so and had located at Newark, NJ. In 1850 the family emmigrated west arriving at Council Bluffs, then known as Kanesville in 1851.
In 1856 she married Frank Welch, a civil engineer. Mr. Welch surveyed and platted the original city of Omaha and helped with the surveying and platting of Council Bluffs. Mr. Welch was also the first stenographer in this part of the country,serving as official stenographer for the organization of the first legislature of Nebraska, held at Omaha. Three months after their marriage, Mr. Welch passed on from this life. There were no children by this union.
In 1858, she was married to John A. Hutchinson of Crescent. With exception of about two years residence in Harrison County, Iowa, she has spent all her life in Pottawattamie County since 1851, residing the great part of this time on a farm northeast of Crescent, until thirteen years ago, when she came to Council Bluffs to live.
Her husband, John A. Hutchison, now an invalid, caused by the fracture of his hip two years ago, has made his home with one of his sons at Central City, Nebraska.
She leaves four sons and two daughters to mourn her demise, which are as follows: William J. of Weston; Ross A., John W., and Dr. Joe W. all of Central City, Nebraska; Mrs. T.C. Muller of Loveland, and Miss Nathalia of Council Bluffs. She also leaves ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Several years ago she became affiliated with the Christian Scientists and has been a faithful adherent up to the hour she was stricken. The funeral will be held from the residence, Mr. Baird, Christian Science reader, officiating. Burial will be in the Crescent Cemetery. (Sec. D, Row 6, July 21, 1838-Dec. 18, 1921)
