Staff Sergeant Lloyd Kadel


First Local Serviceman To Be Reported Killed

That was was the headline on the local newspaper story when Staff Sergeant Lloyd Kadel, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Kadel of Minden was one of ten airmen killed when their B-24 Liberator crashed in the Santa Catalina mountain range about 32 miles northeast of Tucson, Arizona.

Lloyd Kadel was born October 14, 1922, grew up on the farm and received his education in the rural school near his home. He worked on his parents' farm until he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, September 23, 1942.

He received his basic and advanced training at various flying fields and schools, making rapid progress. He received training as an aerial engineer and gunner. Two months before his death he was home on furlough from Salt Lake City, Utah and said he enjoyed the air corps service very much. Prior to the fatal crash, he was stationed at March Field California, where his crew had received the B-24 Liberator.
