Caroline LaChappell

Mrs. CAROLINE LaCHAPPELL, 82 years old, who was almost instantly killed when struck by an automobile on the Lincoln Highway west of Crescent yesterday afternoon, leaves to mourn, one son, five daughters, seventeen grandchildren and six great grandchildren, it was made known today at cutler's Funeral Home where the body was taken.

The aged woman had stepped from a car and was starting to cross the highway when she was struck and hurled forty feet by a car driven by A.H. Smith, 73, 404 Logan Street, according to reports made to the sheriff's department by persons who saw the accident.

William Rodenburg, 257 Harrison Street, had taken Mrs. LaChappell and her daughter, Mrs. Ed. Venard, Route 5, to the home of another daughter, Mrs. William Snyder, near Crescent, with whom Mrs. LaChappell lived. Stopping his car on the road near the Snyder home, Rodenburg said the aged woman stepped from the machine and was almost instantly struck by the Smith car.

Smith, in his report to the authorities, said that he was driving at moderate speed, when the accident happened and was able to stop his car within fifteen feet. It was his first accident in sixteen years of car driving, he said. He was not held.

The immediate survivors of the accident victim are: the son, Paul LaChappel, Lake Township, Mrs. Snyder at Crescent, Mrs. Venard, Mrs. Sadie Sage, Omaha, Mrs. Nellie Burns and Mrs. Mamie Thomas of this city.

The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Rev. Father Portel officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery.

Corner Henry Cutler says an inquest will be held but the date for it has not been set.
