Jackson Lewis was one of the best known of the Pottawattamie County pioneers, having settled in Washington Township some thirty eight years ago. He was born in Ohio, near Logan, March 27, 1847, and came to Iowa with his parents when about 12 years of age. He settled in Fremont County and later came to Pottawattamie.
In 1871, he married Isabella Beal in Decatur County, who died some years ago. He is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth, at home; and three sons, E. B. Lewis and C.B. Lewis of Washington Township and W. J. Lewis of Harlan. Four grandchildren are living at Oakland, IA.
Mr. Lewis' death came very suddenly. He had recently disposed of his large farming interests and moved to this city to reside. He had decided to spend the winter in California and perhaps remain there to live. Carrying out this plan he was at the ticket office making arrangements for transportation for himself and daughter, Elizabeth, when stricken with heart trouble. He was removed to his home and physicians called. It was not thought at first that the attack was serious, but he grew worse and died Monday night shortly after 7 o'clock.
