James Agnew Madden 79, 324 Stutsman Street, manager of the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company here when he retired in 1940 after more than 30 years of service, died Saturday. Members of the family said he suffered a stomach disorder while on vacation at Templar Park, near Spirit Lake. He returned home ill. Saturday he suffered a heart attack. The emergency unit took him to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

His son, 2nd Lt. Jerry Madden, clerk of the Municipal Court, was killed in action in Italy on May 12, 1944. His daughter-in-law, Lucille, became court clerk.

Madden was born at Maddensville, PA, which was founded by his relatives. Later in life he taught a commercial course at Bowling Green, KY, Normal School. He once was a fireman for the North Western Railroad. In 1948 he was presented with a 50-year membership pin by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen.

Madden came to Council Bluffs in 1909 and entered the employ of the Council Bluffs Independent Telephone Company. When it was absorbed into the Bell Company he continued with the new firm in the commercial department.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Missouri Valley, Elks, Shriners, Knights Templar, Council Bluffs War Dads, Independent Order of Redmen, Telephone Company Pioneer Club, Broadway Methodist Church, and the board of directors of the Salvation Army.

He is survived by two daughters, Ruth and Esther Madden of Council Bluffs, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Monday at 2:30 p.m. in Woodring’s Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park.

James Agnew Madden, 80, 324 Stutsman Street, a retired and veteran telephone company employee, died at his home about noon Saturday. The emergency unit was summoned after Mr. Madden suffered a sudden attack of illness at his home. He was pronounced dead a few minutes later by his attending doctor. He was the father of the late Jerry Madden, former clerk of the municipal court, who was killed during World War II. The younger Mr. Madden’s widow, Mrs. Lucille Madden, is currently clerk of the court.
