Silas Matherly


“CIVIL WAR MAN DIES”

Silas Matherly, 89, died late Saturday afternoon at the home of his son, George Matherly, 1807 Avenue J, after an illness of two weeks. He had been a resident of Council Bluffs for eighteen years, and was a member of the United Brethren Church and of the G.A.R.

He is survived by two sons: George and John Matherly, both of Council Bluffs, and two grandchildren. He was a member of the 30th Iowa Infantry and served in Company B. He served under General Grant in Pennsylvania and was with General Sherman on his famous march to the sea.
